Crankshaft timing sprocket oddity.....

Just thought I'd shamelessly throw this one into you guys too, considering some Classics were 200TDi powered....

http://www.landyzone.co.uk/lz/f7/200tdi-why-does-my-crankshaft-sprocket-gear-move-281910.html

Any thoughts??

Should not be like that Ant. Should be solid on woodruff key. That movement is the reason your pushrods bent as the valves made love to the pistons. Put a puller on it in the position you do not get the metallic thump and try to pull it off. Maybe possible just being held by a burr.

ant ive seen this before m8 im going to be blunt basically its foobared. someones been there before with the belt & didn't thread lock it when torqued back up.the halfmoon key at the front of the crank is to locate the crank pulley, directly & inline behind this is the same halfmoon key for the belt pulley. the crank bolt has loosened which has shattered/destroyed the rear halfmoon totally. slowly its chattered away/wearing away the belt pulley slot aswell.sadly 99.9% it damages the crankshaft this is why you cannot remove the belt pulley easily.you will have to try & cut/grind whatever the belt pulley off but your not going to like what you find when removed, sorry m8 but a poss new crank or short engine might be needed, hope im wrong this time.

Remake the slot in the crank larger and fit in oversized woodruff key.
Then flog it quick and buy something sensible to transport your little one.

You could have lied to me Will..... :D:D:D:D:D

We have some pretty talented engineers and machinists at work who make Aircraft components and tooling....so it may be salvagable.

First thing is to get the crank sprocket off and see what we are working with.....

It should be possible to recover the crank, I've done it with limited facilities on a stroker:)

I wouldn't lie ant:D I did tell you in the beginning the problem was behind the front cover;) ok the crank ends up sort of pointed if you get the drift but hey you have some serious aircraft engineers on your side so I may have to swallow my statement/pride hopefully:eek: I suppose its poss but not to joe blogs, get the old pulley off m8 & take a long hard look;)

How is the wee beastie??

Well…. it needs the propshafts putting back on before it will actually go anywhere!

My brother and I have renewed a few seals, and got the oil pressure fixed (I think he told you about that).

Plus we've done a few other small jobs on it, heater O rings, reconnected the LPG, transfer-box rear seal, and a couple of other things.

Still not sure how coolant tight it is, but it runs.

You fixed the transfer box seal?

(might have to, the L322 gearbox is really really not going to last much longer now...struggled this morning)

its a shame the CSK is in bits at the mo.. i'd let you borrow that.. as i know i'd get it back with a new timing chain, front cover and photo-walkthrough !

Looks like the sprocket & keys are made of the cheap Chinese fake metal, either that or they are not man enough for the job.
Very much so, I have not seen a key as mashed as that before! Looking at it, it was just barely hanging on, any longer and it sheared completely, it would have totalled the engine with valves and pistons meeting at speed!:eek::eek:

(speaks through the dribble) Have to say, you are only a few miles up the road from me, so when it is complete, I would love to come round and take a good look.....I'll bring the other half (who is a first class photographer - having done commissions for the likes of Harrods, Harvey Nichols, British Airways, Nikon, Fiat etc etc) just so I can capture the beauty of a sorted CSK......I promise I will try not to dribble on the bodywork :D:D:D:D
Not as busy as you by the looks of it!

Hopefully the 4.0 will be back on the road in two weeks time.
A good job well done to the pair of you, hope it holds you in good stead after all your fine work!

Knew you could do it justice!:);):D
