Getting the front timing cover off?

So,

Once I'd taken all the bolts out it came off in about 10 seconds! Feel a bit silly really, but I was looking at the wrong bolt diagram without realising.

Anyway, 12 hour day today, 6am start but got a lot finished.

New timing cover, new radiator, new oil cooler, new oil cooler pipes, new valley gasket, new sparking plugs, new oil, new rocker cover gaskets, new serpentine belt, new O rings all over the place, and in testing so far, new oil and coolant tight car!

Apart from the mistake with the bolts(!) it went very well. It took longer than I thought it would to clean all the old gasket material off and make things clean before fitting new stuff, I've still got to change the gearbox fluids, final drive oil, and UJs, because I ran out of time….and that was with my brother helping, but got loads done.

Plus the ****ing rain at about 5pm didn't help at all.

Knackered now though!! Thanks for your helpful suggestions Wammers and Saint. Just goes to show rested time is not wasted time! I should have double checked the diagram, abut I was tired, and thought I had. Twice!

Talking of familiar with the GEMS engine ...

I found a rogue ball-bearing in a timing cover from a GEMS engine, probably about 3 - 4 mm in diameter. Any idea where the chuff that might have come from? I'm hoping it was cross-contamination from something else.

In this case it came off a 4.6. I picked it up and under it on the cardboard (to keep it off he floor) was a ball-bearing. Couldn't work out where it came from. Been worried ever since.

I think it came from elsewhere. There was sooo much oil and crap caked on the outside of my FTC it was like glue.

For example I undid the bolt holding a coolant pipe bracket on and dropped it. I didn't hear it hit the foor, looked for ages, couldn't find it, gave up, and then it was found stuck in the oil on the outside of the old FTC.

If that ball bearing had been inside my old FTC it would have been rolling round my engine, and I don't think it was.

Imagine the destruction it would have caused.

But just think, you are now more familiar with your Rangie than you were on Friday!

Very true. I feel confident enough to tackle a cam and bearings change now if I had to. Although the inside of my engine was pretty black, the cam looked in excellent condition. No scoring or rounding of lobes that I could see. Also the sparking plugs that came out looked in great condition. No blackness or oil, just a healthy grey.

Grrrr took a few pictures of the inside of the engine for posterity/reference.

As you said it's just nuts and bolts. Deciding to do it is half the battle.

I cannot think where that bearing came from but it was there. It came from somewhere! I don't like having parts left over.

Unfortunately I broke the replacement gasket on the 4.0 pulling the FTC back a bit to wriggle the woodruff key in. Kicking myself. Have to wait for another to arrive now. Then there's just the airbags, the door locks, the RF receiver and the roof lining to make it useable.

I don't think it's a left over part from a Range Rover. More likely a left over part from my BMX when I did the head and crank bearings in 1987.

I have a box of bits that were going to be fitted and that includes a FTC gasket (will check)

There is also two full sets of rockers, shafts, springs, pedestals, washers, rocker cover gaskets, valley gasket, camshaft, cam followers, push rods, enough to do a top end refresh on the 4.0....

If Al wants to pick up the FTC gasket, he knows where I work!

In work from 9.30am tomoz or from 7.40am ish Wednesday!

You'll have to excuse my brother Ant!

He's decided the 4.0 is worth spending some money (and time) on to use as a runabout, or an off-roader. I think it's more trouble than it's worth, but he can be very headstrong.

No worries, best of luck with it!

It is a good runner, just the oil pressure issue.....

Gaskets are unfortunately Britpart, but they will do!

Box of bits cost me £320 odd.....never opened, never used.....have the lot for £250....if he wants it....else in a week or so I am going to return it to Island 4x4....

I was thinking Dumball Rally!

Thanks for the offer, Saint. Don't think I'll be doing that much to it so best return to Island 4x4 ASAP. Hoping a little effort will be enough to fix it without too much investment. Up to MrGorsky really but it seems a real shame to see her scrapped if a little effort will keep her running another 10 years.

No probs,

Yep, she runs well and pulls strong! Just the oil pressure issue, maybe a bit of tinkering now she isn't a daily drive, and you may be onto a winner, if not, just keep the revs up while standing still and you'll never know :D:D

I'm probably fooling myself but I was hoping a bit of TLC without spending too much might get the oil-pressure up. I live in hope!
