if you do manage to charge it when you connect your leads up, do positive up and just touch the neg to its terminal, and if there is a spark then you have some kind of drain or a bad short

Whenever i disconnect my battery and reconnect it, i get a spark and the under bonnet ECU box cooling fan starts. i leave mine for a week or two and it always starts but i do have a Bosch S5 110Ah 920 CCA which could run the national grid for a day or two :)

Well I've just ordered a Bosch S5 020 from Car Parts 4 less for £126.19 :clap2:

Hopefully that'll sort my problems out.

siclark.

Good choice. that battery is tops for a 4.4 RR..

Hopefully that was ll that was wrong with it. Never run a RR with a dodgy battery..

Bentleys now have three batteries I am told.
A starter.
An auxilary for when the engine is switched off for fridge and things.
A back up starter!

so see, the rr is under battery capacity really..

The porsche 4x4 has two from what i was told, and we think the range rovers are full of electronics, there even more so

Just to let you all know that the new battery seems fine. The RR has been sat outside for 2 days and started straight up this evening without issue.

Now just to sort the oil leak (Possibly rocker cover gaskets) and the stereo that refuses to work !

I've just done my cam cover gaskets if you get stuck although there are a few write ups already, search M62 cam cover. If you have time, it's a nice idea to get them shot blasted and powder coated!but I didn't.
There are a few potential pit falls to watch out for. Also do the vanos solenoid seals at the same time. Only two relatively easy bolts to undo along with a bit of fiddling. I have all the part numbers somewhere.

Guess what, I was woken up at 5am this morning with the alarm going off on the Range Rover. I couldn't unlock it with the remote so used the key in the door. Opened the drivers door and realised straight away no interior lights etc - flat battery AGAIN !

Just been outside to check the battery voltage with the meter and it was showing 0.03 volts so totally drained. And this is a brand new Bosch S5 !

It's been sat since the weekend so not driven for 4 days and wasn't driven for a week before that.

Started it up from a Jump pack and it started and ran fine, had it running for only 15 minutes, switched off and battery showing 11.5 volts.

I've now disconnected the battery until the weekend.

Would it be expected for a Range Rover to drain the battery down in this way if not used much over 2 weeks or have I got something seriously wrong somewhere ?

What's the year / model of your range ?

Early models can experience a few problems that can drain the battery quickly

It's not normal for the battery to drain that quick

Left mine 2 weeks before without any issues

Without wanting to read back over the whole thread....

Have we mentioned:

Final Stage Resistor
Headlamp Wipers not parking
Alternator regulator breaking down
Water leaks into the rear quarter

???

I have left mine for 10 days before and absolutley no issues...

11.5V is a totally flat battery, get it on charge cos even disconnecting it won't help.

Give it a full charge then get it drop/shunt tested, even new batterys regardless of make can fail or contain a duff cell.

Final stage resistor has been mentioned but I didn't have any of the symptoms with erratic blower adjustments etc.

Headlamp wipers look ok.

Not sure about alternator.

Can't see any water leaks in the rear quarter.

After fitting the new Bosch S5 battery it was left for a week and started straight up with no issues.

Could all this kill the new battery then as I've just paid £130 for it ?

It won't do it any good thats for sure, modern batteries are not designed for charge, full discharge, charge etc....

Even though the headlamp wipers look OK, and aren't moving, they can still not be parked properly and the motor is still drawing current.

Take the wiper blades off, cycle the motors and wait from the spindles to stop, then fit the wipers back in the park position, at least it is another item crossed off the list.

Its probably a step by step process but the other guys have mentioned typical or common problems so removing fuses to the wipers may be an option or at least connecting a fuse buddy across them to see for current draw.
it was obviously a known problem from the previous owner hence the already new battery when you purchased it and they probably gave up and sold it to you.
The energy is going somewhere, just need to find out where.......

I've just done a drain test and this is what I found:

Locking the car shows 4 amps which drops down over 30 seconds to 2.8 amps.

After around 10 minutes it's right down to 0.7 amps with the red light in car still on.

After around 20 minutes and with the red light in car off it's down to 0.2 amps.

Same thing again but with fuse 28 for headlight wipers pulled it settles down after 20 minutes to 0.06 amps.

So could the 0.2 amps drain from headlight wipers be enough to totally drain my battery over a week or so ??
