After filling up with fuel my Td5 would not start I first checked my battery terminal's as they sometimes come loose, but they were all ok.
I then remembered that it was just the same symptoms as I've had once when the inter light had blown its fuse and stopped the immobiliser. So I looked around and to get some tools out and I noticed a flashing green light with the words "pin point" on it and I thought is it a mobile phone blocker as I've read in the past that it can effect cars.
so I walked up to the payment box and asked him about it and he said it was faulty and they had a lot cars break down there so I pushed it away it and it started first time.

Running a radio jammer at a filling station

It wasn't that heavy just the wife and four kids and shopping in it and as i was half way off it she put the brakes on as the steering lock came on :monitor_punch:

Why didn't you have the keys in the ignition to stop the lock coming on?

Or failing that make the Doris sit in the back and get the kids to steer as they can't reach the pedals

I've never heard of a mobile doing that and I once watched myth busters and they tried to blow alsorts things up. When im next there I will take a photo with my mobile

Haven't they (ASDA and LR) heard about CE testing and marking?

When CE for testing for electromagnetic interference came in over 10 years ago, cell phones were often cited as big culprits for causing EM problems, hospitals banned them as they were again cited as causing problems, in fact after a lot of testing it was found that Police radios were (potentially) the real culprit!

I find it hard to believe that ASDA are allowed to block phone signals, and that LR ECU,s are that sensitive!

The Navy are allowed to block GPS around their ships but thats another story.

Blocking GSM signals is pretty easy and doesnt require much power, I was testing some of my gear this week, a 15mW 26GHZ signal within .5 metre of a cell phone blocked the SIM easily, bearing in mind that a cell phone power is around 2W. EDIT: This "test" was actually an accident, I allowed a licence free radar to point directly at a cell phone!

So just how much energy are ASDA supposedly using? And how did they get a licence for it? Youre not allowed to just merrily(or legally) block GSM/radio signals!

What about customers with pacemakers?

Story really sounds a bit suspect, but as ever Im ready to be proved wrong!!

BTW Illegal cell phone blockers are used by car thieves to block GSM enabled Trackers, their use is becoming more and more common!

Its not uncommon for staff at petrol stations to switch off a pump if the person using it is using their mobile while filling up. I once asked the guy about it and he said something like if I had seen the training video they see then I wouldnt have to ask why.

thought that had been debunked years ago, why do so many petrol station have phone masts

I Googled the name on the flashing box and it came up with some kind of payment system
it didn't say mobile blocker that I could see it was only that I asked the attendant if it was one . And he said when it flashes its faulty.. I've had a similar thing happen to me a few times, and the most recent time was at my local Asda. Got me thinking now...

My arms are not long enough to reach the pump with a fob, but maybe without leaving a gap to open the door get out and get alongside to open a filler cap, but then if I couldn't get out I couldn't pay.

Ill could stick the fob to my nose as that gets longer now and again.
