Red Diesel?

Easy to do but needs care and caution because nasty chemicals are involved.

Let me know if you would like a short run-down.

If you read the bits on the net, ignore all the crap abouit filtering and washing and so on. They are trying to put you off so they get the oil.

It is dead easy, as long as you take care.

read this. You would be making this stuff.

Sodium Methoxide

CAS No.: 124-41-4
Molecular formula: CH3NaO
Molecular weight: 54.02

Methoxide - Sodium Methoxide - Sodium Methylate - is an organic salt, in pure form a white powder. Sodium methoxide in methanol is a liquid that kills human nerve cells before any pain can be felt. In biodiesel production, "methoxide" is a product of mixing methanol and sodium hydroxide, yielding a solution of sodium methoxide in methanol, and a significant amount of heat. Sodium Methoxide in methanol is a liquid that kills nerve cells before you can feel the pain. Rinse with water and seek medical attention immediately.

has any one tryed veg oil in a 300tdi? if so how did you convert it??

50% Molar Excess of Industrial Methanol to the WVO input, Caustic soda solution (in excess), constant Renolds number (ie stirr vigourously at the same rate) for 45 mins. Leave to settle and the clear top layer is Organic Ester that you can run without damaging your Landy (after paying 28.35p per litre of course) ;)

It actually runs just as well even if the tax isn't paid!

By the way, don't assume all those "clever buggers" at cambridge are any cleverer than us. They may have had good chances at school, and worked hard, and so on, but that does NOT mean our intelligence is any less than theirs.

Education and intelligence are not one and the same.

I mean the boffins that have come up with the OFM technology allowing you to complete esterification of WVO in around 15 minutes, in a very compact (about same size as standard 1000litre DIY kits) continuous flow with integrated separation and rinsing tanks... They are also working on solid catalyst system and using Ethanol instead of Methanol ;)

What about looking at biodiesel rather than red diesel or veg oil?

It is illegal to remove the dye in red, although I did hear it was possible in quite a simple way, don't know if it actually worked though!

Running on veg oil needs a conversion, adding a seperate tank, pre-heaters etc.

Biodiesel is a drop in replacement for your mineral diesel, and can be run on it's own, or blended with mineral diesel in the tank.

Biodiesel was expensive but has now dropped considerably, you can save 10p per litre or more on the mineral diesel prices.

Have a look at Bioenerg - What the world needs now where there is info relating to bio.

oh yes removing the red dye is real simple look on ebay and you can buy a different coloured dye to put in the diesel, it's aimed at big companies supplying their own vehicles from bulk storage tanks. So they can check that employees aren't helping themself to the diesel. but it won't remove the chemical tracers that are put into red diesel which is what customs look for when they dip your tank.

Bloody hell who dug this topic out? It's something I was curious about yonks ago, I've been putting veg oil in the tank for the last month or so!

FFS Jolly greeen bloke !

WE KNOW !

WE HEARD YER BEFORE!

And we still aint buyin any off yer !:D

Yo there,
How often are you looking at for big brother to dip your tank?

I used to work in agriculture for over 20 years, used to travel in excess of 18,000 miles a year and the only places i ever saw customs dipping was at places such as cattle markets, farm sales, machinery sales etc. NEVER antwhere else!!

Occasionally i have known of the police dipping, but they only do a visual check.

So, basically, if you can get rid of the dye then keep away from any agriculturally orientated places you should be ok.

Obviously im not encouraging it at all, but, you can get rid of the dye by straining through a gas mask.

Disclaimer...........

I have never tried it:p

stay well away from North Wales as well. They apparently have regular roadblocks involving Police, Customs, Vosa, and even benefits agency. and will use any excuse to impound your vehicle.

The laws changed. If you use less than 2500 lr of SVO a year you don't have to register or pay tax.

DieselVeg Home - Diesel to Vegetable Oil engine conversions

Lidel 0.59p per lr
Morrisons 0.59p perl lr

Anyone know where its cheeper?

Not quiet as simple as it sounds. The BioDiesel must meet strict quality control standards to meet the criteria for reduced duty. and The use of vegetable oils will still attract the higher rate of duty.

So despite what these diy kit manufacturers tell you the average man in the street is still liable to pay top whack for his fuel.
