With credit to the OP for keeping at the Freelander. You can buy ramps for the boot to keep the wheelchair open and collapse the rear seats. As for your own health in transfering a disabled passenger, trying a swivel pad may help. also wear support brace belt for your passenger to grasp or on the passenger for you to grasp. A whalebone back support belt for lifting from a dead lift helps a lot. The simple things can put your own back out even getting in an out the Freelander. Another practical item is a platform for the wheelchair to chair seat height.
Freelander was my first choice after my old 110 but as my mother conditions and abilities got worse it was a struggle with having limited funds.
There is lots that can be done to make transportation of less able passengers easier.
