point is without diff flange pinion will have movement ,as taper bearings can now move , you test with flange tight

Ah ok. Flange did have a bit movement but I'll tighten it back up and see how it is

iirc you need to do the correct torque for the preload, and you can test by removing the driveshafts and checking with a gauge. (not that i'd guess many people do)

Yeah I read that. I'll get a good diff before I go stripping this one down. Can be done without a gauge I think though, it is a land rover after all lol

not really just tight as flange pushes bearing against the shim which is selectable to get the right preload, preload will reduce as bearing wears which is ok as long as you get no freeplay at all which is noticeable by play in diff flange

Ill put the flange back on tonight and give it a check. Do you happen to have the torque setting to hand? My dog ate my Haynes manual. Literally.

I assume that if the flange still has play then the bearing has taken a battering? If so how much play is too much, or is it a case of using common sense?

think it's 130nm, but do as james said if it's not too important, just make it tight.

Hm ill dig out a new nut tonight and see how it goes then. I think its got too much play with the flange on but ill tighten it up properly and go from there

any play other than rotational in the diff flange is too much,ie in/out ,up/down
