Ok So ive seen a few little posts about cross drilled gears that go into the lt77 defender box?

Is it worth upgrading to this?

Ive looked on ash crofts website and it shows you how to check your serial number to see if its available to upgrade to it, whats the benefit?

I dont think you can upgrade to it, you need to check the serial numbers.
It basically allows oil to lubricate the output shaft splines.
Are your output shaft splines worn?

I think the two have different numbers of teeth, my old box couldnt take a cross drilled gear.
So I took a fine cutting disc to it and put a hole in it where the cross drill should have been, that was 8 years ago and its been fine so far.

Lt230 suffix c and later take a cross drilled input gear, 300 tdi and td5 are different.

If it is suffix b an oil plate was available.

early boxes upto suffix c do take frc5428 which isnt replaceable with cross drilled gear ftc5089, both have 26 teeth but pitch is different, ftc5089 will fit any defender box upto q box with fine teeth ,ftc5087 is 28 tooth cross drilled input and will fit disco boxes from suffix e on till q type, pre e ftc5428 fits up till suffix c then ftc5089 as defender

Wouldnt be able to tell you, I haven't checked, Just thought if its worth splashing out on £50 to prolong the gears then why not.
It's not the gear its self that wears but splines inside it and those on the main shaft from the gear box, when they go you will have no drive.

ive got a few , they do work ,though if you can cross drilled is better, in std form an lt77 needs thread cutting off for them to fit as theres a boss with oil screw thread on it ,though some bore/drill center out to cater for threads on mainshaft

James, on a typical 1989 lt77 box would i expect to be able to get a cross drilled gear or is it a matter of actually having to check my serial number?
