Hi everyone, i have read a few posts on the forums and they have provided a lot of help most times. Finally decided to sign up and become a part of the community. However i am experiencing a strange problem with my lt77 gearbox (learned wich one it is one here). My defender had a bad pressure plate, was still drivable but didn't have much power. I changed the clutch, plate, throw out bearing and fork. Now i hear a coarse sound coming from the box and the only position the engine runs in is 4th gear and neutral, doesn't go in 5th or 3rd and if i get it in any other gears the engine labours down as if it's about to stall and all this happens with both drive shafts disconnected. I have made no errors working on the clutch system but someone had move the gearbox from where i left it and had caused the gear stick to jump out of place and also get wet, had to remove water from the turret and get the stick back in place. I am really frustrated, any help would be appreciated

does gear stick move through all gears fully
if it does youve probably somehow applied a great force pushing input shaft into box

No james, i have a lot of trouble getting it into any gear except 4th, if i do get ot in 1st pr 2nd. Its by vigorously rocking the stick back amd forth

the selector shaft has a pin that locates between the two fork slots its possible to pull it out of the slot on one fork leaving it in a gear so selecting any other means two gears are selected locking the box up

saw this on another post. Is this what you are talking about?

Is yes, would it be possible for this to happen if someone had tried to move the gearbox amd caused it to roll over on the gear stick?

thats the 5th gear interlock theres another further forward theres two 10mm headed screws hold it in its were the pin and the two forks 3rd/4th and 1st/2nd sit, if fork is selecting 4th and pin is no longer in its slot but moved back you might select other gears but you wont be able to deselect 4th

I am only familiar with the little i have already experienced. I think those 10mm screws are just before the gear stick on what look like a small flat plate. I will have to research, familiarize myself with these parts and their names and process all this new information. However I assume you're suggesting i get the pin on the selector shaft back in the slot on the fork so the gears can function normally, is that correct?

its not as easy as that you have to get pin back into the fork slot if thats the case which does mean removing that interlock

Seems the 5th gear selector pin is out of the fork.
Am i correct and how would i go about correcting this

Im stuck, selector shaft won't come back. I rotated it left and found that side of the interlock can't enter the slot on the fork so i tried turning the other way and now it's not moving

Thanks for all the help, I haven't logged in for a while but i got my gearbox problem sorted out. I had to pay $40,000.00 JMD to get a land rover mechanic to fix it though, we took the box out and took it apart. The 5th gear selector pin wasn't the only problem, my reverse selector pin had jumped out as well but now the old bad boy is driving again :)
