Is it possible to disconnect the electrical wiring to the VIS motors on a v6 engine when the engine/electrics are oft, so you can then power up and start the engine and drive it with the VIS not functioning, for test purposes only?

Just wondering.

Edit: for those wondering... vis means variable intake system. The engine computer controls 2 electric motors which each control a value, dependent on engine revs/load and what the accelerator pedal is asking for.

Yes you can disconnect one or both motors.
I test mine are working by doing that very thing. I expect it will log a fault using T4. It doesn't using a generic OBD2 reader though.

Hi Hippo
On a different subject to normal, when I replaced my manifold it came with a servo motor on it so I have the origonal one which you are welcome to. You could plug it in so the motor works but the valves wouldn't move.

Thanks for the offer but I don't have a fault. I'm thinknng about my auto shift problem on occasional down change. Managed to reduce it quite a bit but it occasionally happens still with the air con on. I was wondering if error code P1475 "variable intake balance valve short to ground" could be causing the problem. Since the fault has reduced the engine feels more smoother and so does all the gear changes, and not just the fault gear change being smoother. The other changes were acceptable before. It was just the 3 to 2 down shift I didn't like. It seems to give a feeling of more power or smoother power delivery. It may not be, but it got me thinking. I wonder if there's an intermittent short to ground on the VIS causing my intermittent auto problem. VIS is powered by the same relay as the auto computers and sensors, and the air con.

P1475 has been coming up for several years now. It drives ok and when I clear it it comes back after a bit but I don't notice a change. I was going to take the VIS oft and do the screw and glue mod but int got round to it. For some reason I thought the VIS motors had to be set-up (calibrated) if they were disconnected electrically then connected again.

If you only have a balance code then, unplug the balance motor. It will flag another fault code but nothing else. There's no need to modify anything. The balance motor will keep you value closed while it's unplugged. ;)
