Had some coolant issues recently. While the cause is still unknown it seems to be behaving itself so by way of preventative maintenance I thought I'd replace the thermostat and water pump. In reading RAVE it appears I need to get the viscous fan off (Manual 2.5 DT) and that requires 2 specialist tools. A quick look at the usual suspects (Rimmer Bros, Island-4x4 and Fleabay) show silly prices so ...

Anyone have the required tools in the Bucks area and would be willing to loan them out for a few beers?

viscous fan has a left hand threat actually you need a long spanner , with your hand hit hard and fast to the right hand side , the viscous fan will loose ,

Same technique but the diesel has a reverse thread I think so clout the other way!

If Wammers' Brummie Spanner doesn't work then I'll order one. Wouldn't get here by the weekend anyway.

Reading RAVE I'll need to topup the gearbox fluid after putting everything back. Seem to remember I needed to borrow a large star socket or torx when I did the gearbox but cannot remember if that was the filler or drain plug now. All gone a bit hazy.

filler for manual boxs is t55 (torx bit) drain 32mm or 1.1/4

I consider myself to be a fairly confident and competent Spanner wrangler, and I have only met with limited success using a long spanner and hammer method

You are not doing it correctly. Works every time no miss fires has done for many years.

I'm a self-confessed desk-jockey. I get my (pristine ) spanners out only when something goes wrong (which with the P38 is more than any other car I've owned) or for servicing. I've a long track record of excessive force - usually when my patience starts to wear thin, say 2 or 3 minutes.

Given I've no MTF94 left and Saint's comments I'll put an order in with Rimmer Bros, order the cheapo tools and see if I can do the thermostat without having to take off everything RAVE says I have to. Waterpump can be done next week!

The Landy tool I saw had a sort of half-moon cut-out with holes to fit over bolts to stop the shaft spinning. Sure this is the right one?

Maybe Harry Hammer will come out and play after all. How much is a new viscous fan anyway ...

If you get the cooling system operating as it should then do Datatec's fan mod and leave the viscous fan off.

Thanks TomCat but I like to try and keep things original where I see no reason to change. I rather like the mechanical rather than electrical connection, especially given the electrics on these things!

Fitted new radiator, water pump and thermostat now so hopefully it'll be good for a bit.
