Question on value of a rare beast.

Posted this question in "introduce yourself" but this seems a better place?

I've joined really with a specific question! Hope that's allowed ?

I'm a volunteer rescue technician with an organisation called West Midlands Search & Rescue Visiting. www.wmsar.org.uk (WMSAR)

We own a Defender 130 ambulance which was converted by Continental Contracts, originally for the Red Cross. It's H registered and has covered 72000 miles from new!

The organisation is thinking of selling the ambulance to fund the purchase of a couple of Late Discovery 2 which better suit the current operational needs of WMSAR.

The issue is we've had a 'bid' for the Defender but, as a charity which relies entirely on donations for funding, we need to ensure we are achieving the best possible sale price

So the question is "how do the experts value such a rare beast?"

Just from the photos, I would estimate around £10,000.

Yep the chassis is good, recently had it on ramp at the garage and it all looks good.

Ok assuming the charity wants to sell it, where would be the best place to advertise it?

Auto trader, Land Rover Mags, and Ebay might be good for starters.

eBay would be a good way to waste your time. Might be worth sticking a post in MREW's mag, there is probably a team out there that'll take it off of your hands. That'd make a good control vehicle.

eBay would be a good way to waste your time. Might be worth sticking a post in MREW's mag, there is probably a team out there that'll take it off of your hands. That'd make a good control vehicle.

We did consider modifying it into a mobile control, but ended up doing this instead:




The thought behind it being that we could cope with a land based search & still be able to use the Ambo to tow a boat for a water job at same time. Highly unlikely but a possibility

We used to have a control trailer, it was a lot of hassle though.

Also has that most important of all facilities, a boiler to make a brew. ;D

Oh yeah, it isn't cheap business. There is a proposal for us to get a 4x4 Sprinter (as used by RAF MRT). The vehicle and coach work would come in the region of 75k. It is on the back burner for now.

Have you sat down as a group and asked your selves if you can actually justify the need for and cost of, a dedicated Landrover and or Ambulance. I was involved in a minor role with South Snowdonia MRT But a friend and his wife were committee members and team Search Managers. And SSMRT actually turned down the offer of a 110 ambulance because they didn't think they needed one & couldn't justify the cost of keeping and maintaining one.

We have and the answer is we need 2!

More so for the water search side. We response within the region for FS &Police and the team can, and has been, deployed nationally for DEFRA for flood rescue so it's a requirement for towing boats basically!
