Does this tow bar seem extraordinarily low?

Hi guys,

This is the 3rd Landy I've owned recently bought but it is the 1st one to have a tow bar/hook. To me it looks really low to the ground, I'm tempted to remove the hole thing including the awful steps! Does it look normal or is just me and the fact I'm not used to it or perhaps take the steps off see if that helps...

Looks lower than my Dixon Bate adjustable even at full drop. May be the camera angle though. Measure the actual ground clearance and we can compare. I have exactly 12 inches clearance from the lowest part of my drop plate.

or that was the height they wanted. Owner customized is my guess used more for a step , than for towing

Looks good for ploughing a field... I bought a defender that came with one of those, got rid of it straight off. If something needs towing, find some other mug to do it.. ruddy klingons.

I would say that is what they wanted or they wouldn't have done it. They must have thought it was a good idea.

Bit low for me, I have a witter adjustable one and never clipped the ground with it when it's on it's highest setting.

don't think its any lower than my dixon on its lowest setting, though my stabiliser plate drops it further.

those steps are made of toffee and will crush at the first bump, I bent mine reversing the caravan (oops)

I'll hold my hands up :5bblush5: I don't know about stuff like that. I joined 2 years ago sold my disco that I had at the time and forgot I was a member to be honest till I bought this pain in the arse 90 but that's another thing.

According to eu legislation...

A towball should be a max of 450 mm from ground to top, I think the min is 370mm but will check..

The million Euro question! The EC Directive 94/20/EC states that the towball height should be between 350 and 420mm with the vehicle in the ‘laden’ condition. Laden condition may have been defined (by the manufacturer) as either fully laden (the maximum technically permitted mass of the vehicle as shown in the vehicle handbook), or, conventionally laden (defined as 68.5kg per specified passenger seat and 6.5kg of luggage per specified passenger and located in the centre of the luggage storage area). Alternatively, the towball may be at the height or height range specified by the vehicle manufacturer in the homologation documents and possibly the vehicle handbook. Not so straightforward!

Having towed lots of different horse trailers it can make a huge difference to towing if you can get it about level, so whilst it doesn't look normal its most likely be done to fit a certain type of trailer/carvan. My personal choice for towing is a Witter tow bar,which are fab but not the cheapest. Hope that helps.
