Gassy maybe, A bit chemical like I suppose. Its quite noticeable I suppose, but I am concerned I am being over sensative.
My VW smells sometimes too so not sure.

Also to add - the oil on the dipstick looks normal.

What sort of LPG system do you have - a Single Point system or Multipoint system!?

Single Point systems do smell of gas as they just spray the gas into the air intake system whereas a multipoint system injects directly into the cylinder, so usually not to smelly!

More info to add - the top hose was solid when running. (could just squeeze it a bit)

Rock solid is a problem, if you can collapse the hose to about halfway with a good amount of squeezing applied not close to a join or end, that should be fine....but that all depends on had size and grip strength, I have big hands and good grip and I can mostly collapse a hose...so is all relative

Even on petrol, they can still have a whiff of gas on a single point system - obviously if it is a strong smell, get it looked at!

If it is solid, that could point to HGF or Slipped Liner, as something will be over pressurising the coolant system!

Thanks for that. Sounds like compression test is next stage?
Will run it up and double check how solid it is first again.

I had another go at overheating it last night and checked the hose again.
It ran to half way on the gauge and then the fans kicked in and stayed there. (that was a first)
Hoses were not as hard as i thought - I could squeeze them a fair bit when up to temperature.
Also I noticed there was a fair amount of water coming from the tailpipes, but that it gradually reduced to very little water once it was hot.
Lastly although there was some light white smoke on start up (maybe normal?) it had gone when up to temperature.
Next stage before I do compression is to take it for a drive. I tried to insure it yesterday on another policy which Swiftcover advertise you can - but after going through it all witgh them they refused as it is a risky vehicle.
Had a cheap quote, so may just start another insurance policy.

I took it out for a drive tonight now I am insured - gave it a fairly hard time and nothing. No overheating, so excessive steam.
Hoses were hot but slightly squeezable.
Fans didnt come on.
Stuck it on diagnostics and water temp was at 97 degrees.
Only fault on my basic diagnostics was vehicle speed sensor A whatever that is.
It is running a bit lumpy though - might need a service though?
MOT has expired so hopefully will get it booked into tomorrow and see what happens!

Found something odd tonight. I undid the cap and found it was very full of water ... In fact when I took the lid off it split out. Is this normal?
Then I noticed the top hose was really soft .... I could squeeze it together with two fingers.
When i squeezed i a few times it made the water level drop back down but hose still very soft.
Started the engine and ran it up to temperature. Still no overheating and hose firmed up.
Any clues in this?

Never take the cap off with engine hot....the system is under pressure to raise the boiling point of the coolant....releasing the cap decreases the pressure causing the water level to rise due to thermal expansion...the hoses would be soft cos you have opened the system and dumped the pressure out!

Squeezing the hoses will cause the tank level to rise and fall...as you are squeezing the water out of the hose into the tank, and then when you release, the water gets sucked out of the tank back into the hose again....Normal!

That makes sense, it was odd because it didn't happen the previous couple of times I had taken the cap off so thought I was on to something.
I am starting to think there is nothing wrong with this engine very unlikely the previous owner was making the overheating problem up?
It goes for an MOT this morning so will give it a good hard drive to the station.

Oh and thanks for reminder on cap. I am ultra careful on that one. Been there done that and never again!

Range rover p38 petrol 2001 still over heating. New water pump,thermostat and radiator. Top of rad very hot bottom only Luke warm. Now found drip on heater looks like seals gone.
Any ideas on the over heating
