depends what cam you want, as standard my 4.4 would have had the same as a LR low comp early v8 but that as for use in a car. I have now fitted high comp pistons to it so I am trying to decide. RS say the p5 cam of which they are selling the FM version is the best of the standard rv8 cams of the 16 different types fitted tot he rv8 over the years.

personally for me I dont want to have to use a vernia timing set so I just want the best std cam of the 16 to make the most of my 9.5:1 (std comp for the 4.4 was 9:1)

Would that not be just a bit more lift and little more duration, for more fuel/air mixture

what is an FM version? and how does that compare to the other cams in terms of duration etc

the Early carb cams are the same timing as a 3.9 cam but advanced 2 degrees. The EFi cam is different.

It might be worth having a post on the v8forum

Fedral mogul. Apparently there are 16 different std rv8 cams. thats according to RS. they say the early p5 one is the best one. I agree ther efi one would be unsuitable for my non efi engine. as all 3.9 were efi they wont be suitable either. no modded cam will work well for me as it just moves the power up the rev band and its off the line power needed for a heavy rrc.

when you say v8 forum which do you mean mate? the one on here? that where this thread is :)

like I said the 3.9 cam is the same as the 3.5 carb but advanced a couple of degrees. as you have changed comp ratio and are running more displacement than a 3.5 you can run a wilder cam and not have such an effect lower down the rev range. you could run a standard (high comp)3.5 cam but how effective will it be with the increased displacment?

low comp 3.5 cam is different from high comp

Compression ratio. 9.35: 1

Valve timing Inlet/ Exhaust
Opens ........................... 30" B.T.D.C. /68" B.B.D.C.
Closes ................ 75" A.B .D. C./ 37" A.T.D.C.
Duration . 285" /285”
Valve peak 112.5" A.T.D.C. /105.5" B.T.D.C.

Compression ratio 8.13: 1

Valve timing Inlet / Exhaust
Opens ......................... 36" B.T.D.C./ 74" B.B.D.C.
Closes ................ 64" A.B .D. C./ 26" A.T.D.C.
Duration . 280" / 280”
Valve peak 99" A.T.D.C./ 119" B.T.D.C.

the 3.9 (bot low/high) is

Opens 32 BTDC....70 BBDC
Closes 73 ABDC....35 ATDC
duration 285.................285
valve peak 104 ATDC..114 BTDC

IF CHOOSING A CAM FOR P76 4.4 V8: THIS CAM WILL SUIT ORIGINAL APPLICATION I.E. ENGINE STILL IN A P76. IF THE ENGINE IS INSTALLED IN A RANGE ROVER, WE SUGGEST USING THE ETC6849 CAMSHAFT, WHICH HAS SLIGHTLY LESS LIFT AND OVERLAP RESULTING IN MORE POWER AT LOWER RPM, BUT THE CAM GEAR BOLT NEEDS TO BE CHANGED TO A METRIC ONE, PART NUMBER: ERC5749

CAM SPECS:

ETC6850: INLET OPENS: 30 BTDC, CLOSES 75 ABDC, DUR 285, VALVE PEAK 112.5 ATDC. EXHAUST OPENS 68 BBDC, CLOSES 37 ATDC, DUR 285, VALVE PEAK 105.5 BTDC

ETC6849: INLET OPENS: 36 BTDC, CLOSES 64 ABDC, DUR 280, VALVE PEAK 99 ATDC. EXHAUST OPENS 74 BBDC, CLOSES 26 ATDC, DUR 280, VALVE PEAK 119

dunno, still debating. tbh its has 285 ftlbs as standard, how much torque do I need I mean thats double the standard. so even if not all of it is available low down it will be enough and then some for overtaking mid range :p

so they suggest using the cam for the low comp 3.5 when using it in a 4x4.

I'd be more inclinded to run the high comp cam but you'll be strangling yourself further up the rev range if you stick to the 3.5 timing.

peak power on the 4.4 was 4250rpm or somthing stupid. running a slightly wilder cam will give you power beyond that without loosing much if any from 1500rpm.

like you say your torque figure is quite big compared to a standard 3.5.

am I reading it wrong poah?

I thought it was saying the low comp one was for the p76 car (and what that listing is for) and the other one they say is best suited for the range rover was the higher comp one?

if you compare the specs to the ones I posted on the previous page

ETC6850 - high comp 3.5 V8
ETC6849 - low comp 3.5 V8

well its all back from the machine shop- a lot cleaner too which was a free bonus. I am unable to successfully upload pics or view my old albums atm, is there a fault on LZ?

Get with the program! get a photo bucket (or similar) account and upload them on there and post the img link in the box here... so much better!
