Hi,

I have been wondering what MPG I can get out of my Disco, so this week I took him for a few trips and measured my MPG.

What I did was to fill it up, did some long steady 40 miles mixed country lane and 55-60 mph trips on the motorway and a couple in traffic watching idiots in BMW's trying to get up small gradients in the snow, mixed driving.

Anyway, 255 miles on 9.4 Gal = 27.12 mpg :)

This is all on a stock setup no EGR or Decat, but it has been well serviced. Mind you on short cold trips this drops a lot.

I thought this was pretty good.

Rear back exhaust box fell off last Nov two weeks after passing MOT so replaced entire system with straight thro type ie no silencers. Before got 29mpg,with new system 32mpg every tankfull.Mixed driving but rarely go above 60mph on motorway.

Can be as low as about 22/23 towing, best of about 32 long distance, anywhere in between, but it all depends on the right foot .. I stopped caring what the actual mpg was a while ago. I've had 30+ mpg towing, I've had 25 ish empty!

I generally work on a full tank getting me >350 miles if I'm towing and >420 when not ... ish ... ;)

I never managed more than 24 out of my EDC 300 (auto).

Drive em properly then. They're slow useless piles of ****e. if ya drive like it's about to fall apart (you'll be right oneday) and you'll get good MPG. Try to race the chavs or even keep it at 70/75 and you'll get **** Mileage..

I used to thrash the arse out of mine and it got **** mileage, and tried it's damn best to fall apart :D but when driven sensibly it did good mileage..

I get between 21 and 24 with an EDC auto, had 31 on a run to Wales but most of my journeys are short stop starts never getting upto temperature.

The last TDi 300 I had was a '98 auto (80,000mls) and over the 16,000 mls I had her she averaged 33mpg.

This includes day to day, motorway (60mph), Sahara Desert; the lot.

She was a brilliant TDI.

I'm not sure about mpg figures but on my edc auto I try to keep the rpm around 2200 when accelerating so it tends to take an age to get up to speed but it's at peak torque whilst doing it :) my fuel needle doesn't seem to plummet like it did before I started doing that!

I still reckon that with very careful driving, keeping speed down, let it pick up speed in its own time, use gears properly, slow down early, etc, etc. and keeping tyre pressure up, 40 mpg is easily possible from a manual 300 tdi on a run.

back in the summer i did a couple of long motorway journeys takin the daughter to uni open days, driving gently , sat at 70 on motorway or dual carriageway for hundreds of miles , one tankeful on the 200tdi disco worked out at 40mpg.,...normally arround the 33mpg i normaly drive between i and 2k revs in the lower gears.
its acceleration in low gears at high revs and using the brakes that kills mpg
