td5 speedo onto old v8 90

All of them! Its not as strarght forward as you'd think.
The speedo gets its signal from the ECU which in turn gets its signal from the speed sender fitted to the transfer box.

Actually the speedo gets its signal straight from the transducer on the transfer box, the ECU isn't involved at all.

In terms of what bits you'd need:

  • Td5 Speedo Head
  • Td5 instrument loom
  • Speed Transducer
  • Some wiring etc.

The transducer goes into the transfer box in place of the current speedo cable. Speedo goes in dash, you'll need to chop about the Td5 instrument loom to remove all the stuff for the other gauges. Then a bit of wiring and you're up and running!

However personally I think it's worth changing the whole binnacle while you're at it. That way you get the better lit fuel and temperature gauges, as well as the far superior LED warning light panel. If you can use a soldering iron and a set of crimpers then it's not a hard job.

what upgrafing all the dials and dash lights ect to the newer td5/v8 one?

Yes, you can change the whole binnacle over.

Wiltshire: The point would be the fact that the illumination is a lot better in the later Td5 setup. So you can see your gauges in the dark. That and the LED warning light panel which means you can see those during the day. Oh and the speedo needle doesn't wobble about like it can do with the mechanical models :)

I've done a couple of vehicles, I wouldn't say it was a shed-load of work. As above, so long as you can use a soldering iron and a set of crimpers it's simple enough to do.

its a landrover not the starship enterprise:rolleyes:

i didnt realise they were led and yes ive come across this before i think i am deginately going to have to give it ago but will i be okai leaving my original temp guage in with it being v8?

That doesn't mean it can't have decent visible gauges? It's not like this is some aftermarket ****e being bolted in, it's the genuine setup from Td5 models after all.

You can leave the original gauge if you like yes. In theory you can follow the link and use the Td5 gauge (you might not need the sender adaptor as V8s use a 1/8" NPT thread I think), but given that this setup was designed by Land Rover to work with Tdi engines you may be better off with the V8 gauge.

yeah thats the thing the v8 runs hotter i think?? so need the right guage or will say its over heating all the time

I don't know what temperature the V8 runs at, would depend on the thermostat fitted.

My 200Tdi has an 88 degree 'stat, which means the Td5 gauge runs just to the left of halfway. I would imagine a V8 would run about the same, but don't know for sure I'm afraid.

well mine had two temp guages atm one was obviously the original 2.5 petrol guage and the other is the v8 guage before i changed the engine it run just under half way but new engine is h/c so runs hotter and runs just over

Surely easier to fit a LED lamp to the old binnacle if lighting of dials is the issue and I quite like the speedo needle that at low speeds bounces around - you dont get that in these new cars, lets you know you driving around something special!!

You can put LED bulbs in the back of the gauges, but that doesn't solve the issue of their poor lighting design. And won't help the warning lights, which can be a pain to see during the day. Td5 setup solves all these issues, and does so while still looking factory with green backlighting, and avoiding horrible mis-matched aftermarket gauges and the like.

As for the needle, well each to their own. Personally I don't need a dodgy speedo to remind me that I'm driving something special :)

At the end of the day everybody has a different idea of what the vehicle is to them, but as far as I can see the Td5 gauge mod is a simple and highly effective undertaking which looks great and makes the vehicle nicer to drive. I don't think it really has any drawbacks, other than the fact that it's getting harder to find Td5 binnacles at a decent price these days!
