Problems again ok so today my top radiator hose blew, after searching on here and others I find a lot of mixed issues, however I did notice today that the heater was not blowing warm (except on window program ) of course I am hoping for a simple solution, my only source on a sunday for hose is my local breakers.
To make it worse there is water in carpet in front of drivers seat and seatbelt is wet as it rolls out, my feeling (before today) on that was sunroof drain as there regularly is a damp pool below drivers wing/door area.

Any input or advice would be appreciated.

of course I am hoping for a simple solution, my only source on a sunday for hose is my local breakers.
To make it worse there is water in carpet in front of drivers seat and seatbelt is wet as it rolls out, The seatbelt reel is above floor level so if it is sitting in water you should be able to bathe your feet as you drive. Have you checked your pollen filters and plenum drains?

As for the blown hose, it could be from old age to a cracked block, more info required.

As you can imagine I am hoping to flush/fill and grin but its never been that simple since she replaced the Disco, anyway as I say the heater in the car did not appear to be getting any heat so a blockage would be a fair guess but obviously I need to check out all possibilities before setting off on another long trip. i was 60 miles from home and traveling well when I noticed what I thought was smoke behind me (turns out it was steam) and I immediately looked at the temp which was around normal and rising, I pulled onto the hard shoulder and very quickly found a 4/5 inch tear in the mid area of the top hose and immediately called Greenflag, once home i poured in a gallon of water, started it and reversed into driveway, first thing tomorrow I will see if I can source a hose.

You won't get heat from heater if the water is ****ing out somewhere else. If you've got white smoke from exhaust, may well be head gasket; which could be cause or result of overheating burst pipe. After fitting new pipe, bleed system properly, check your thermostat, rad, waterpump, fan coupling, and check pressure on top hose when engine up to temp. If you still have white smoke - head gasket time.
Damp in drivers footwell means o ring replacement needed.
Under seatbelt is sunroof/door seals/drain or dribbling dog.

I would bodge a repair with some of the hose repair from halfords, not their own brand - they do another in an orange box with two large rolls of tape their own kit is ****e.

This way you can do the job properly and order a new hose in instead rather than go through the trouble of partially draining the system and find it goes again next week with a second hand one. The repair kit worked on mine for about a week before it started dribbling coolant out again.

looking at his other posts keith i'd say dse..
apart from water on floor,which could be another problem?
i'm going with poss water pump failure due to plastic impeller failing.
i had this happen not so long ago (remember my question about head keith) i was towing our caravan up a motorway hill and top hose blew good style! RAC came out and the bloke told me my motor was,in his words "GOOSED" my mate had a look and found the impeller on water pump had come off lol so i replaced that with a branded metal 1,new stat,new rad while i was at it for piece of mind and all is good now and i got a spare head lol

Thanks guy's yes its a diesel lump, the car has never used/lost any water or shown signs of smoke or steam prior to break down, I will look into all suggestions, the pump sounds like the first option so as soon as i can i'll get on with checking it through, hose prob avail Monday as I have several good parts dealers around me.

Upon starting to strip down for pump and thermostat checks I discovered the fan was OFF and lying loose in the cowling
could this possibly be the sole cause of the heat/pressure issue?

The radiator is out and drained, only coolant, no contamination and the viscous coupling is cleaned up and still screws into place but I'm not sure just how free this should be, as it is I would say it requires a pound or two of pressure on the spanner to turn the coupling..... normal or goosed?

if it spins freely, its goosed. it should have some resistance.

Sounds like you are turning the engine not the viscous coupling. Cold, you should be able to turn the fan by the blades but it will be stiff. Engine off of course. Hot you should not be able to stop it with a tightly rolled newspaper thrust into the blades with the engine idling. Mind your hands.

Just looked at the photo's, it's off the car so ignore my first sentence.

If it's seized, it will over cool the car rather than cause your overheating problem.

It's almost impossible to tell without spinning it at engine speed. It'll start off feeling quite stiff, then loosen up, then stiffen again as the temperature rises.

Whilst you've got the rad out remove the water pump and check it internally.

The threaded part looks well butchered, I'd replace it or do my electric fans mod to use the aircon fans for cooling, you can bin the viscous fan then.

Whilst you've got the rad out remove the water pump and check it internally.

+1 on that, the plastic impellers break up or come loose on the shaft especially after an overheat
