The AJ V8 is made in capacities I believe ranging from 3.2 litres to 5 litres, the latter using thin wall pressed liners to accommodate the required bore size and is unique to Aston Martin. The 3.2 is made by Ford in the states and used in the Lincoln marque among others. Jag/LR engines are made in the Ford plant at Bridgend supposedly in a dedicated part of the plant.
The engine was designed to use nicasil liners. Early engines suffered failures of the nicasil coating blamed on high sulpher fuel. A switch was then made to conventional cast liners. I would guess that, like the 4.0 & 4.6 LR V8, this must have weakened the block.
Similar issues were found on the early M62 engine on the BMW 7'ers (had a couple of 740's in the past)
 
Me too - I had a 1996 740i (the 4.0 M60) Sold that due to running costs at the time!!

The a few years later a 740iL with the 4.4 M62 - and I kid you not, I managed to get from Lightwater to Portsmouth in 26 minutes in that one to catch the IoW Ferry.....

my fave was my '99 4.4 740, i got from bradford to manchester to collect a pair of wedding rings i had forgotten and back again in 42 minutes, i was willing to take the ban as i was best man and had forgotten em, i reckon any judge would have let me off with a big fine and loads of points if i had been stopped, it was an awesome motor, something that big shouldnt go so fast:eek:
 
I once did Glasgow to Worthing on a Sunday night in a smidge over 6 hours including a food and refueling stop before all the fecking speed cameras on the motorways. That was in a Jaguar XJS with the AJ 3.6 motor. Great car and totally trouble free.

I have a huge soft spot for the XJS - just a pity they are more prone to rust than a Classic RR

Had mine new, company car, sold after 3 years so rust was not a problem, still got the TWR steering wheel:) It was better even that the P38 for long distance mile eating, it would cruise at an indicated 140mph!

I love the 7'er and I love Range Rovers....so when the L322 came into my price range I had to have one - it is basically an E38 on stilts....

My boss pulled up in his brand new BMW and I couldn't help admiring it. "Nice car", I said as he got out.

"Well," he said, noticing my admiring look, "if you work hard, put the effort and the hours in, I will have an even better one next year."

I am the reason my boss got a new car. When I started for this company I only had an Escort Van (kitted out as a mini campervan, was lovely). Shortly after I traded it in and got my P38. The boss decided it was too nice and made his car look less flashy so he went out and got an Audi A4 cabriolet, with a silly personal plate. No one wants to tell him, but my P38 still makes it look his car look cheap.

I might be underpaid right now, but I still count it as a win.

the answer was "ohh god no it far too epensive to do that to it"
WHAT!!!! thats what its f@~king built to do what the point of buying an offroad car and never going offroad? i meen its like buying caviar and giving it to the dog

That's because bits keep breaking on them. By doing a heavy anchor on the brakes seem's to knock bushes out.

The best range rover ever made was the early 2 door V8, on springs & huge levers in the cockpit.

If you look at the 2006 TdV8, there is a silencer across the back that would be quickly wiped off if it was off roaded.
They are just big luxury cars.:(

Having read up the specs at a press launches I have to say there is evidence they have retained some off roading capability in the L405.....

900mm max wading height - better than a standard fit defender and 200mm more than an L322
Underbody protection as standard.
4 'raised' profile settings plus an extra manual set 35mm beyond the auto ground out (+35mm) height setting total susp lift 145mm
upto 50mph in off road raised setting +40mm
Re enforced double wishbones with 260mm front wheel travel and 310mm rear wheel travel

Its just covered with cow hide and a half a Brazilian rainforest!
 
I don't want to start an argument but............. I've had two RR Classics long ago, a V8 that never quite managed 11mpg and then one with an old Perkins diesel out of a Massey Harris combine harvester. That was quarter of a century ago and I'm getting the urge to return to the World's finest driving (occasionally, if you're lucky?) position. Is there a 'best buy' in Range Rovers? Or is every damn one a perfect example of allowing your heart to rule your head - and empty your wallet?
