300tdi auto transfer box problem

i just bought another dsc today its amazing every where except the transfer box wich is a pain in the arse to change from hi to low and lock ect is there any common faults with the transfer box and are they differant to manual gear box transfer boxes i see they are quite cheap to buy so would any 300tdi transfer box fit

same box ,id remove consol and have look at lever housing especially where shafts pokes out of passenger side of housing

slow down lol didnt really get that you mean the linkage or just the nob and shaft itself and yes i did just say those two words, but were all adults here (and i couldnt think of another word )

lever sits through a cross shaft ,its this shaft that normally seizes in aliminum housing especially on lh side opposite to the linkage worth setting linkage so it moves equally in all directions while your in there

I had a similar problem with mine, i.e. the usual seized due to lack of use.
I followed the advice given on here first.
Undo the knob on the diff lock selector, remove the gator and load it up with WD40. If you can get a product called release all, even better.
Get underneath the disco and you'll see the selection lever which looks liek a fold piece of aluminium. Soak every joint with WD40 (other oil based products are available) and leave for 12 hours or so.
then try engaging as much as possible hi-lo lo-hi lock/unlock and after few goes it should start moving.
worked well for me and I make a point of moving the lever to select each option at least once a month whether I need it or not.

The only other thing to be aware of, my LED had gone from the dash so I tested the diff lock (1 wheel up jobby) and I know it all works well
Testing again on the beach a few days later a defo works really well!

First things first; are you aware that you must put the autobox into Neutral BEFORE try to select High to Low and vice versa?


Re selecting diff-lock, it is very common for this sideways movement of the lever seizes up due to lack of use. Lubricate and work it often is the cure.

right so i went out today with the intention of doing the above and just took note of the diagram in front of the selector and it says 0-5mph so i tried it while i was rolling in neutral and it went in no problems i think mine must just have tension on the drive train even in neutral so im not to bothered at the minuted about having to do it while rolling a little bit works well the dash light works and its catching the wheels on full lock < also ive been told for some reason the auto is better off road why is this and is it true ?

It depends on who you talk to, if it's someone who only drives manual gearbox vehicles they will say no!

I've driven both types off-road in a variety of conditions and I'm convinced that auto is better. If you select low-range and then use the gear selector you can drive like a manual or, leave it in D and let the gearbox select gear.

This works well except for steep downhill slopes where you need to select gear no. 1 to control speed.

thats what i was thinking i managed to pull off on a gradient that any manual ive ever had has struggled to get up with a slight run up and the auto went up it with ease so at the minute im over the moon with the way the auto performs including the road the motorway is much more pleasant in the auto

As you're enjoying it so much might I suggest that you change the oil and filter in the autobox asap, then you'll be able to enjoy it for a lot longer

Auto's are good off road but make sure you only go between D and R when the wheels are completely not moving, if your stuck in a hole and trying to get out going back and forth this can kill the clutches in the autobox.

after having a good look round it today i dont think i will be doing any off roading shes a beaut

you ever seen a boot floor like that ?
