Well I've been thinking and i would like to do a winch challange (a local one if possible) I've been paying and playing for a while, seam to manage to get it stuck and drag it out with the winch so this seams like it would be right up my street,

I have a defender 90 spec as follows

Lifted 2" with + 2" dampers dislocation cones
Insa special tracks
9000lb warn winch
Snorkel
Breather kit
Detroit locker in the rear
Detroit trutrac in the front,

I have a few straps for the winch ect,

Do I need someone in another vehicle to work as a team? I know I need a navigator/co driver/ general gofor to attach the winch,

Do I need an msa licence? I used to hold one but it's expired now was for hill climbs and sprits so probs no good for this?

If it taking part under msa do I need a cage?

Any events in Yorkshire soon? I've gone through pages on google but not found any events in yorkshireb

check out mud monsters and devon4x4 forum.
Depending on the event conditions anything short of a saley hydraulic or gp winch will probably not be up to the job

Haha, I'll get in touch with the lad who I bought my locker and tru trac off, he does challenges all over

Ive done a lot of winch/ punch challenges
The best advice i can give is make sure your winch will be upto continuous use and that the battery u use is in top nick and will be upto prolonged charge and discharging as the winch will drain it very quickly and charge needs to be put back efficiently

Decent ropes are a must personally i wont use nothing but plasma on challenges as there a lot easier to use and imo safer than wire in confined areas like woodland
Snatch block or 2 are a must aswell
Lots of strops/shackles

Just looked and my battery is a yuasa 643, 96ah cargo battery,

Means nothing to me is it any good?

I've just fit a new winch solinoid and striped and cleaned the winch so all should be good there oh ad rewired it with 70mm2 cable from the battery and back to the battery, I have a few shackles and a strap ( gona gt a selection of straps) I have a snatch block.

Anything eles?

Probably be best with a twin battery set-up though.

Single batterys ok for occassional use but not for prolonged use at a winch challenge
If your serious about it i would get a twin setup and split charge
Im on my 3rd split charge which ive now finally found a good one its an allbright split charge
But thats goin and im fitting a twin alternator setup as the current setup just cant keep up with the power demands of the 8274

What battery's would you recommend? And split charge system? I have a 9000lb winch warn xd, how much power will I draw?

Bin looking, to buy my winch new a warn xd900 is £898.80 :0

I didn't k is how much it was as it cme with my Landy,

What's a used 8274 worth?

A lot. circa £600-£900

There are bargains to be had.

Before splashing out on an 8274 use your current winch but use it with a snatch block and double line it instead of single lining. You will save your battery life by a butt load.
