There is always a few on devon4x4, but as the whole sit is more geared around challenge driving etc, your right they dont hang around for long.

Oh yes. Might be slightly cheaper then.
A new 12v one is £1500 and a 24v one is £2500
Id give your current winch a go and see if you get the bug for it first mate. You can always upgrade if you do like it.

it would help you out in the sense that it will hold more juice, so you can winch for longer.
Do you just have your main starter battery at the moment?

Dont use the battery you use to start your car to winch from swell, its bad practice. You want to keep that circuit free from discharge. If you go a little over the top on the old winching, then you wont be able to start your motor. \\
If your going to have a go at winch challenge then i would get a second battery and a split charger, so you can charge both from the alternator but only discharge the extra battery.
You could use an X-eng split charge or a T-maxx system to do this.
I have the T-maxx and a couple of Numax batteries and i have a Warn xp9.5. Works a treat.

Twin battery set-up helps a lot. The problem is not just draining your starter battery but as your voltage drops the amperage draw increases and you burn out the wiring so doubling your storage capacity doubles your winching time.
Higher rated or double alternators help but will never keep up with the drain of a big winch. They will reduce down-time though.

No if one batterys weaker than the other one it will be pointless if your gonna fit a 2nd battery do it properly and fit a split charge or even better a twin alt setup which is nxt on my list
