Why did you post this reply??

You are entitled to your opinion but with respect you can't know much about Jatco.

Jatco gearboxes which are made by Nissan are used by loads of different car manufacturers throughout the world.

Are they all daft??

The Freelander version is the JF506E and is used in:
VW Golf and Sharan
MG ZT
Rover 75
Jaguar X-Type
Ford Mondeo
Mazda MPV
and perhaps a few more.

If you know the exact part number you need you could shop around some of the other car manufacturers I've listed who also use this box.

Nothing wrong with it IMHO - I like it.

Thanks for the replies , got the solenoid I needed for veh 1 (LR main stealer £40 ish) , replaced it and that solved it , my other one same source , replaced it which fixed that part of the fault , but then discovered that probably because of being driven with the hard change fault , 4th and 5th were hardly driving , so lowered the box under n/s chassis and stripped it out , found that high piston had cracked ( only visible using compressed air) also some friction and drive plates burnt so got the parts from these people

they have branches in Rochdale and Derby . They were very helpful , put it
back together and seems to be working fine , will know for sure soon as daughter/friends have gone camping etc up round snowdonia :cool:
 
That's good news tacr2man,

It's good to know that there are folks around who are prepared to repair and replace parts of the Jatco - rather than just replace the whole box, which is the approach most garages and the dealers have.

Probably that's because, as someone else said, they haven't got the expertise to fix it - plus there's more profit of course in replacing.

As a matter of interest - how old is your Jatco?

Let's know how it gets on in Snowdonia.

Ok, you too are entitled to your opinion,I merely run a Land Rover garage and I'm pi--ed off with giving bad news to owners of cars with failed parts that should last the lifetime of the car.If you own one and its been OK for you then good luck to you.When you are seeing multiples of them and also communicating regularly with other LR independants you start to see patterns emerge.
 
Out of the faults we get on ere, the jatco is a low percentage. All cars have their faults, which become popular over time as they're used more. But we don't see jatco as a major issue.
 
the mileages are 108,000 and 114,000 I also had a rover 75 cdti tourer with a jatco and that had 158,000 IIRC on when I sold it and had been trouble free ! HTSH

The jatco fitment in the freelander is very accessible and most probs( the common ones) would seem fixable in situ JMHO

OK then - with this extra info I can understand why you are not over-enamored with Jatco boxes.

I'm always happy to hear from people with hands-on experience and I respect and take note of such experience.

However it was your saying that no-one else used them that initially caused me to respond to your post.

The fact that the identical box is to be found in Jaguar X-Types and Ford Mondeos would lead me to believe that some people think them a bit better than the 'crap' description you gave them.

Having run a couple of garages for makes other than Landrover , I can see where you are coming from , have to say tho that it not reserved to Land rover , one not so respected brand but the other two were on a par with the landrover market sector. The most annoying part is the way manufacturers try to wriggle out of it JMHO

I'm on holiday in Switzerland at the moment,part of the reason for this holiday is to give me a chance to reflect on where my business is going(Whilst away from its daily pressures).So far my thoughts are that I have had enough of this business,it is becoming more difficult to swallow giving bad news to customers - or putting up with the moans from customers who are facing large repair bills.I have no interest in what other vehicles those boxes are fitted to,the last two FL1 autos I have seen for autobox faults have both resulted in the cars being scrapped.Both owners chose to bin them after a long line of heavy repair bills.For them it was the final straw.Both vehicles were far from old bangers,actually the v6 one was pretty much immaculate,top spec etc.
This goes completely against the reasons I decided to specialise in Land Rovers in the first place,the old boast of 75% of all LR's ever built are still going - seems to have been forgotten.Thinking about earlier LR autos,mainly the ZF's in RRC and D1,they seem to manage years of hard work with very little trouble in comparison and are usually easy to fix if they do go wrong.And owners were prepared to have a long term plan towards maintenance.
I can see the TDV6 engine and its manual and autoboxes being the most recent throwaway units that LR have used.It seems to me its all about flash toys and nothing about long term life or service.By the end of this year my diagnostic kit will hopefully make a decision for me to carry on this business.
 
id agree with most of that ,my jobs going the way of washing machine repairers etc ,though i havent found jatco box hard to repair mechanically
 
Eightinavee , know exactly what you mean , thought just running someone elses business would be less hassle , but it wasnt , esp when the final decisions arent your own .The garage game Is not the business it once was :5bauto:
 
We live in a throw away society these days. Everything comes down to cost. Cost is a huge issue for v6 owners. They int worth much so the cost of repair may be prohibitive. Especially if you use the repair money towards a more economical diesel Freelander.

If my auto were to fail now, then spending £1800 on a recon couldn't be justified. Repair cost would annoy me too. Each time I think “last fix” and its good for many years. Its a shame to see them wasted but that's life. Loads of old vehicles which int worth much in the UK, are shipped oversees these days. Scrap yards will collect them for their ebay parts sales too. Most older cars are worth more stripped for parts sales. Sad but true.
