Is this true or is it just rubbish??

I've owned my D2 commercial for two years, it's done 206000 miles, all I've had to do is wear and tear stuff that you'd expect. Brakes shocks, ball joints, wheel bearing, air bags, it's very tidy and you have no idea it's been to the moon and back! I paid £5000 for it, there was another lower mileage one up for £13000 at the same time, for the saving I don't think it's even classed as a gamble
I've had two 300 tdis the last one a commercial, as a van the td5 is much easier to live and work with, rear side doors make a huge difference, it's slightly bigger too. Plus being an 04 it looks a lot more modern. For what I use it for I wouldn't go back to a 300 unless I wanted it for off roading, then I'd happily have my old commercial back!

Had one 200tdi & two 300tdi`s loved them all but give me a TD5 anyday for towing the extra grunt it has over the old tdi`s make it so much better & a TD5 is just as easy to fix yourself as any tdi . Have been looking at disco 3`s as a replacement but they just a bit to much laptop ****e on then for my like`n if it go`s wrong

I's got a D2. One previous owner 68k on the clock when I bought it, FSH, but I got a good one, no rot and well looked after but she was no bargain price, the first owner opted for lots of optional extras and spared no expense AND towed, but so what? That's what LR's are for aren't they? Work horses. Mines a work horse, it tows, but I look after it to the endth degree so I'm confident whoever has her after me won't be disappointed! It's not about the paperwork it's about the owners. Get a proper LR owner before you, you won't go far wrong.... Good luck in your search!

disco 2s arent particulary prone for expensive break downs ,i look after many 100k and above that have had very little trouble ,injector loom ,fpr ,the odd wheel bearing ,fuel pump ,pick one thats been looked after and good underneath ,its more important than mileage

They are an odd bunch really,some going over 200k with little trouble,other are rusting,leaking piles of poo with less than 100k.Overall I think they are poor compared to TDI ones,welding is cheap in comparison.Engine repairs are just too costly,TD5's are horrible where heads,cranks etc are concerned.

obviously td5 isnt as simple as a tdi but powers nice ,id rather fit another td5 engine if needed than try a put a rotten tdi body right ,swings and round abouts

hello all i brought a 53plate 2004 regiested td5 discovery commercial last sept after driving my 300tdi discovery offroader about for 3 years the td5 had done 120k when i got it one owner from new main dealer service history right up to november 2010 all iv done on it is service 2 lower ball joints and trackrod end and its done 132k now and i paid 3750 for it
i cant fault it its been a brilliant car more refined but there is something about a tdi discovery hence why iv got 2 disco 1s atm !!!!

yes its a fooking mess i havent worked out what hes done it looks more like the monocoque shell stuck to a 300 chassis as it sits hi as fook, when you open the bonnet the engine is miles below, not sure its on the road legally as there is no way he could register it here,why he bothered i dont know cause nothing works inside it starts and moves thats all i have seen.

I don't really understand the appeal of Disco 2s. Disco 1's, have proven off road ability, and they're cheap as chips. I would imagine my 98 xs isn't all that different to a 99 disco 2 apart from the light clusters etc.
D3s and 4s have the obvious appeal of being new and flashy.

But disco 2s? Alot more expensive and for what? Annoying air bag suspension, electrics that break every 20 minutes, and as J Clarkson puts it, still look like the range rovers rural, rather stupid cousin.

Have owned three D1s in the past (both V8 and Tdi) and now six months into ownership of my first D2.
I hunted around and found what I wanted in a basic spec five seater on coil suspension, no sunroofs, no ACE, no climate - much simpler, much less to go wrong......
I fear the electronics but believe in preventative maintenance so fingers crossed.......at least it flew through the MOT last month.
Much better performance from the TD5, tbh torquewise it's on a par with a 3.9 V8, difference being I'm easily achieving 30 to 34 mpg on AT tyres, more on a run.
As for the off road ability, well, I am in the process of addressing some of the D2 shortcomings in comparison to D1.
It'll take a little time and money to make it what I want - I definitely won't go back to a D1 (or even a V8) now, TD5 all the way!
