if you went to a garage youd get local motor factor one ,ive never heard of any prolems with that ,but youy can tell when servicing has been less frequent
 
On a different note.......
the seal has been spraying out some oil from the drive shaft in middle under car (big circular thing)
Friend has got the seal and is going to help me do it...Could I have lost much from there/done any damage? I am hoping to change it tomorrow. as well as replace upper shocker rubber on rear.
 
We use SHPD E7 or somthing equilivent so I guess it was semi. Somthing with a decent Temp range for Turbo diesels. Change regularly every year at least or every 6-8k miles.

Not too expensive. You don't need £30 a gallon stuff. With oil and much in life the brand costs more than the product. I think the last 25 litre drum we got was around £55-60 quid from a trade warehouse.

As I am a lazy bugger.....well no real shops within a 45 min drive I came across this LAND ROVER DISCOVERY 300 TDi ENGINE FILTER SERVICE KIT + COMMA 15W40 ENGINE OIL | eBay

Seems to me I would only save around a fiver by trying to source all the parts separately, and plus this comes to my door so reckon would save more than that in the juice going to motorfactors - any comments on this package?

Why is it not so critical in a TDI? they chuck all sorts of hydrocarbons into the oil, run at extremely high pressures and are worked damn hard. Personally I'd rather spend a bit more on oil than replace an engine... but that's just me...

If Castrol is so **** then why do Landrover use it as their factory fill and service oil????? As I work very closely with BP i know exactly how good their oil is :)

The 300tdi lump was designed during the iron age when oil was as advanced as mud and so they were specced to run on the oils available at the time. Sticking a modern synthetic in isnt going to make the engine run better and could do more harm than good as you wont have the fine clearances that you get on a modern engine.

If you have a TDV6 then yer you should use a full synthetic 5w30 but any semi synthetic 10 or 15w40 is still going to be better than the oils that were around at the time of launch :nod:
 
i remember asking engineers from lr in the 90s why they used castrol gtx i believe at the time ,they said it was just the best deal ,that particular oil at the time never seemed to have enough detergent ,and engines were filthy compared to farmers vehicles that had used other oils
 
I wasn't suggesting that synthetic should be used, I agree it would be a waste of money, not least because engines tend to use more FS than SS.
I realise it came across as "Castrol is ****" it was more meant at a cynical swipe at their "Magnatec Technology" Branding.....
Manufacturers tend to use what ever decent oil they can get the best discount on.
 
Price is a factor but manufacturers test the oils for many hours in all conditions to make sure it meets the requirements so its got to be upto the job as well. Castrol is our main supplier at work but we also test the engines with Texaco, Esso and Fuchs oils for different markets round the world.
 
I use comma sonic, 20w50 mineral with high ZDP, the sort of oil that was knocking about when the v8 was designed.

Put some basic 15w40 in the diesel and it'll be happy. Nice and thick and not too much synthetic and change it every 6 months ideally.

Now that's a happy old engine :)

It took me awhile to realize you brits don't drive much.Before I retired was changing oil in one truck every 7-8 weeks:p:p:p So it takes a bit to get used to some one only driving 6-8000 miles a year

thats the best spelled piece youve posted for a while john and thats from me :D,getting some to change oils in axles ,gear boxes etc isnt easy yearly is easier to remember and is what alot seem to do when it comes to servicing higher mileage users tend to go with mileage
