sudden high engine revs

Hi, i own 1990 90, from time to time it suffers from a sudden engine rev rage and a large cloud of smoke. If i shut engine off it will start as normal and run as normal,any thoughts .

Have you checked for diesel in the engine oil? ...assuming it is a diesel that is!

sounds like it's running away on it's own oil.

Maybe knowing what engine it is might help us.:doh:

Turbo seals? If it's a turbo that is. You're lucky you can stop it.

If its not the clutch then yep it's running away.

Can someone educate me? what do i do if it happens to me? im assuming just turning the key wont stop the engine?

If you can't stall it get out and stand back. Although it wouldnt be too hard to make a device to smother the intake (cable operated butterfly or remotely activated fire extinguisher with nozzle in intake somewhere)

get out of the car bloody fast!
running away means that an oil seal, e.g. the turbo oil seal, leaks. Thus the engine oil is sucked into the intake and burnt. If you turn off the engine, the fuel solenoid shuts but if the leak is serious enough it will run on on it's own oil until there is none left. As it can be leaking more than there sould be fuel, as it is a doozil, it starts revving to burn the fuel it is being given, thus "running away".

Look at the videos posted.
If it is running away (a seal can let a drop of fuel through, then seal again) I wouldnt drive it.

This happens when stationary, too. If it is clutch slipping, this will happen only on acceleration and is usually rear main seal.

It'd take quite a strong butterfly valve. They suck stronger than your polish prostitute!
