Right Gents - Who's going to offer advice to a young laydee!?

£400 and its not overheating!! That is a bargain. Can only assume the person you brought it from took it to a garage with the suspension problem and they scared him with new air springs, valve block and compressor required and it was going to cost £1000's. When in reality can be put right for not very much.

Good luck with it and if your old man is handy with the spanners you should have a breeze.
 
Thanks Fortgrange - He was quoted 2k to put new air suspension bags on all round, with no guarantee that it would fix the problem - I'd have been terrified too! Good old Land Rover dealerships!
 
airbags £72 a corner,compressor around £100 recon if you know where to look, airbags are not hard to do, make sure compressor is good, eas main brain may have gone down,that can be pricey,other than that fairly straightforward to put right and should not cost thousands.
a grand athe absolute most if you are unlucky,do it yourself and save ££££££££££s

Andrealouisea, invest 15 quid with Datatek for his EAS Computer Cable (including EAS software), 230 quid at Island 4x4 for a complete set of oem airbags also order the fitting clips 10 quid. Then spend a rewarding morning changing all the airbags and recalibrating the suspension if the heights are slightly off.

2K for a suspension airbags someones taking the ****....:eek:

You've got a bargan even after fitting the suspension parts....

Until you get the car and assess it, you can't do anything. Let us know when you get it, if compressor is running Etc. Then come back on tell us what you have and we will talk you through the checks, until then all is speculation.
 
Go for coils, n standard rims, no fat tyres, load up the trailor, find a steep hill, drive up it....

And if it doesnt waggle its back end around or overheat, keep it....cos its a good buy :)
 
Thanks All, Collecting it on Tuesday - Will update as soon as I have news. I've PM'd Datatek to order a cable and disc so will get those ordered as soon as poss.

£400 is a steal.

Put coils on it & it won't even be worth that!

Keep the airbags especially if it's going to be used for towing. These range rovers drive like giant marshmellows on coils.

The best bit of advice i could possibly give you, is for you to take your vehicle to someone who know's what they're doing. Get some proper diagnostics on the vehicle & see what going on.
There may be nothing wrong with the airbags or pump, as it could just be the thermal cut off switch not activating the system.
These vehicles really are simple & cheap to keep on the road if you've got the right contacts.
 
Rubbish about the mot we have been through that and as for handling like a marshmallow , more rubbish, I actually prefer the handling on mine now. I have no problems towing a 23 foot boat, never been flashed about dazzling anyone. Up to you but I would not feel comftorable towing with EAS, cause when it goes wrong, I'll leave it at that.

Rubbish, the p38 was designed with eas and should be run with eas. You told your insurance about the mod :rolleyes:

Full EU MOT directive has not yet been implimented. Not due to be until 2014. More to follow next year, and year after, as far as i am aware. Already in many European countries none standard parts are not permitted. Coils have never been a standard fit on a P38. Although i suppose it does depend on how retrospective the government make the implimentation.

Coil springs can and do snap, y'know...particularly if you tow heavy loads with them!

I agree, for towing you can't beat EAS, one of the reasons the Disco 3 is such a great tow vehicle. Self-levelling suspension is brilliant and safer than coils too. Which would you rather, this:

Self-levelling suspension is great, last year I bought three quarters of a ton worth of bricks, sand and cement, shoving the lot into the back of my poor Citroën C5 - totally overloading it. A Wickes man came running over saying "you can drive like that!" (the car was on its bump stops at this point!) I just turned the ignition and hey presto - one level car. The Wickes man looked amazed. Didn't feel the weight at all thanks to the self-levelling suspension. I don't condone driving overloaded vehicles but I was too lazy to make two journeys!

Similarly as a lad we managed to get two pallets of Yellow Pages into the back of my Mum's Citroën Safari (evening job to earn a few quid) the car drove perfectly well - god only knows how much weight was in the back of that! Who would want to fit nasty old coils? What's the next upgrade? Leaf springs, drum brakes and cart wheels?

It'd have to be pretty damn sick for it not to be a bargain at £400 though. Is worth more than that as scrap!

May well be as the sum of it's parts if broken but not as a complete car at the scrap - yard gate, even assuming it can get there under it's own steam (no pun intended) :rolleyes:
