clonking noise when pulling off through gears

grab hold of the shaft and check for any wobble in the joint (should be none), same with the sliding joint. Also check for cracking on the end caps (metal disks about the size of 2p coin on the outside of the joint yokes....4 per joint)

Whilst browsing the underside of mine today with handbrake off, i got apprx 2" play in both props ( twisting side to side ) and ofc the customary clunk to go with it. Although i also use careful clutch release, i guess i'm looking at the output shafts in the xfer box?

Jamesmartin suggested it could be the T-Box diff or the T-Box inout gear (and GBox output shaft splines)

they dont wear ,play will be center diff and freeplay in gears (not adjustable),and rear diff ,drive members etc,might have a 19j turbo ,

Hi,

Not had a chance to get the fender in to have a look yet,but was thinking would it be better to just replace the prop shaft altogether obviously cost more but will take no time to fit it compared to taking the old uj's out.I take it new propshafts come with the uj's

To be fair i think britpart do a propshaft kit with uj's fitted which is cheap as chips...

I got a spare tbox here ( original 1.4 ) so i may get the book out and strip it down so i knows what's what.

so finaly draged my lasy ass under the thing today and.........

Defenatly not the uj's no play in them on either propshaft.Rear propshaft is solid but the entire front prop shaft is rotating about 1" either way and making the clunk noise.

where do I go from here chaps.

I would check the driving members next, pop the rubber caps off the wheel centres and get someone to rotate your props and see if the shaft moves inside the driving member splines, if there's movement then replace the driving member, they're not that expensive and a new gasket to go behind it is just pennies. I had a bit of a clonk on my 110 when I bought it and that was just one driving member that was shagged, fitted a new one in all of 10mins, job done!

The play in that propshaft don't look too bad, about the same as mine anyway. I think a little rotational movement ain't too much of a problem, tis side-to-side you gotta worry about?

Rear propshaft is solid but the entire front prop shaft is rotating about 1" either way and making the clunk noise.

Did ya remember to take the handbrake off before wiggling rear prop?

are you sure.I would have thought that it would be likey to cause more damage every time it bangs when it takes up the torque.

Have to wait for one of the wiser ones to give you a definite answer but I do remember reading that some rotational movement is quite normal.

Both of mine have some some rotational movement, the front a tad more then the back. I can achieve a hefty clunk from underneath during taking up drive and gear changing if I don't work the pedals smooth enough, but usually a bit of care and she'll take up power again nice and smoothly.

Though I'm starting to think I may have gearbox wear issues, going to have a look at output shaft sometime soon.

Also when the handbrake is on it moves a good 4-5" before stopping.

Handbrake movement is normal.

I must ask though, do you get an odd response when reversing? Its almost like its slipping the gear as I gl backwards, its the same at any speed other than snails pace.
