Ok i need a little help please.....

I am going to view and hopefully buy 1999 S Reg LAND ROVER FREELANDER 1.8 XEI STATION WAGON tomorrow...

However I have noticed this:

The lettering on the front of the car is not exactly between the two black plastic vertical grill posts....

This could be something sinister but woud it be possible that these have just been replaced??

I Havent seen the inside of the engine compartment yet and of course will be checking everything with a fine tooth comb. I am taking a man that can lol

(please advise if there is anything specific to the freelander that i should be aware of and making sure i def check).

It says its HPI cleared but of course that doesnt mean its never had a bang .....

Any views on this would be most helpful before i go to look & maybe part with my cash ....

Many thanks if you take the time to reply ,,, im just a little bit worried....

It has had the HG & water works work carried out ... but once again anything can happen ..Hope it all goes well fingers crossed ....

Would just like to know if anyone could advise why the lettering may be out ....

Thank yoooooo

Certainly sounds like its been replaced (badly) at some point so if you view have a good check around the front of the car under the bonnet for signs of accident repairs. Being optimistic, I guess someone could just have stolen the lettering and the owner has replaced it

Thank you .... yeah it will get a good going over .... I do know it has FSH ... but even so ... its a bit concerning as you can imagine ...

Loads of folk on ebay sell the lettering. The old stuff comes off with a little gentle heat as its only stuck on with double sided adhesive padding....So having said all this its quite common for a landy not to have the original lettering. I wouldn't let it put you off

Whats the lettering on the bonnet got to do with the condition of the car?

I'd be more concerned with oil in the coolant, knackered IRD/VCU, duff diff, cracked chassis.......etc

I have one of these BTW:) and I think they're brilliant

Well hoyt ... i am concerned that maybe its had a bang and been repaired badly .... im just asking for a little advice on the lettering/bonnet, the lines all look straight and no obvious paint work ....

The engine side of things & relevant paperwork will be thoroughly checked over ......it was just that i noticed the letters were off ....

Thank for the advise so far, most of you have been really helpful & pleasant ...

Bonnet Could have been painted, a damaged bonnet or rust,is there a slight colour difference too the wings,or someone not wearing their glasses when they replaced the lettering

I was trying to be helpful, if you meant me, the main checks on this car are:-

When reversing on full lock there will be a slight braking effect, this is normal, but if it's any more than slight it could be pointing to a serious transmission fault. The Hippo has a viscous coupling in the middle of the propshaft this allows the car to be mainly in front wheel drive till it detects the front wheels slipping this is when the fluid stiffens and generates more drive to the rear axle.
If it's been like this for a while the transmission will have been wound up to the extent that the crown wheel and pinion in the IRD unit will have broken.
This happened to mine and cost me a bloody fortune.
Google the subject and go into this informed about the transmission and what to look for.
Also do the same for the engine as this, while being a brilliant peice of kit, has it's own probs.

Paint and bonnet looked fine .... have to wait till the morning to get a good nosey under it .... really hope its ok though ... looked at quite a few, had a drive in a couple and loved it ...

Hoyt ,,, wasnt referring to you, you have indeed been very helpful ... thanks so much, it puts your mind at rest to just hear a few good things lol

Glad you mentioned the propshaft as it says its had front pads/discs & prop replaced recently ...... Its a bloody minefield out there and ive been through all this with my MGF lol ... I never learn .... but always try to gather as much info as poss beforehand .....

thanks for the heads up

No probs matey, i've just looked at the pics and it's a stunner. Mine has cloth seats and none of the light guards, steps and leather on it. The letters look to me like like some klondike has cack handedly stuck them on, but yes you're right check slam panel rad/light mountings for damage.
Good luck and try to get a warranty even if it's a short one :)

Thank yooooooooooooooo Hoyt ... thanks Chris ....

Sh***ing it if truth be known lol ....

I always pick the ones with loads of known issues ,,,, but so far i have to say ive done quite well (been lucky prob) and have managed to avoid the baddies ,,,, lol

Hate buying cars....should just get a normal car ... errrm NOOOOOOOOOOO WAYYYYYY :D
