I have seen a '52 Mercedes ML270 cdi which has caught my eye. Has anyone had any experience of these? I currently have a '97 P38 2.5dse which is showing it's age and this Merc does look rather nice. What does anyone know regarding fuel economy, reliability, build quality etc? I could be tempted..... :confused:

i know a chap with one and he loves it,personally i find most modern mercs have great engines but dont seem to match it when it comes to interior build quality.but thats just my opinion they dont seem to be built like the tanks of old mercedes.
 
I've heard that the series of engines is fairly bullet proof. I had been looking at the E class estate prior to this. I need loads of space for the family and large boot capacity as well to compare with my RR. Do you know if it's the same series of engines in the E class that have been dropped into the M class? I'm looking at a '52 plate as I mentioned. It's done 125,000 miles but it is a 9 year old car. I hear that if you get a good one they'll go on for ever. Hopefully it'll be sold by the time I get back from holiday and then I can relax!

They are the mercedes equivelent to a p38. You either get a good un or you get a bad un. There's no inbetween.

Common reason for going out to em are.....Injector seals, gearbox failure, key fob/immobiliser issues, power steering failure, cam, crank, o2 sensors, Air flow meters, abs sensors, window switches, bla bla bla switch/sensor failures,


If you want a ML then go for a 2003 onwards as the pre-facelift models (2001-2002) had the major faults. 2003 onwards models tend to mainly suffer with the 'wear and tear' faults although the odd gearbox issue does tend to pop up.
 
That's good advice. As I say hopefully it'll be sold when I get back from holiday and I can calm down and not knock another hole in my overdraft. I might plod on with my P38 having just had it serviced, new no. 4 injector fitted, 4 new tyres and £400 worth of brake pipes and hoses to get it through the MOT. I always see another car at the wrong time. I'd just spend a lot on my old Disco 300tdi two when I saw the P38 I'm driving now. I just had to have it. I'm starting to feel the same about he Merc!
 
what they like offroad? i know the x5 is crap
they were good enough for jurrassic park.

The ML is built in America, not Germany so just remember your not getting stuttgart mercedes build quality... not that thats been up to much for a while now. When it was reviewed on top gear I remember Jeremy Clarkson showing how he could get his finger in the gap of the rear lights and the bumper!

We had a fleet of 7, 4.4 v8 petrol Rangies and 1 ML320. We used to fight not to use the ML. It was awful!!! Lower top end, unstable at speed. The interior is pants.

Other ML drivers dont let on like Landy drivers do.
