My question is, if the dude pressure tested your head and said it was fine and fitted a new HG.. Why did it fail again??

Also, why did the radiator not release the pressure? I thought there is a pressure release valve built in to prevent this??
isnt this significant? It has been tested and clarified. The suspected oil is is fact undiluted Halfords Antifreeze. It is clear and oily and smells like castor oil.

wot it is, to start with and the fact it aint mixed.
Well, to be honest... I did the smell and taste test.. I had an old bottle of Halfords Anti freeze which smelled and looked the same. As it did not taste like diesel, I came to that conclusion,... But After speaking to Ratty, I think that there is a possibility of diesel mixed in.. Why else would it over pressurise and blow???? Just because I cant smell it, does not mean it it is not there.. I could easily be wrong.. I am not the most scientific of testers!!!
It also makes sense to rattys thoughts, because I took the car on the Motorway for an hour yesterday and took it to 85mph to test it's handling since fiddling with the steering box and tracking... That almost certainly would have put the head under a lot of pressure. If it had a weak point, I suspect that would have done it.... Then again, I could be wrong.. As strange as it sounds, I have been known to be wrong before!!!! LOL..
Cheers Ratty...
I will get the results from the pressure testing tomorrow.. I will update then and then I will send the head away too!!
Thanks again all, I really appreciate the advice!
Get yourself a 110 Estate wagon and ride in style*SNIFF* The results are back.....
Not good news....
1. Top hose split under pressure.
2. Caused by back pressure from cracked head
3. HG knackered.
4. Coolant bolt in engine leaking.
5. Crank Casing have crack (hidden underneath piles of old oil)
6. ABS module.. Not functioning
7. Exciter ring in front hub broken (HOW???????)
8. Engine wiring loom filled with oil.
This report was done by Harwoods LR.
*BOOOOO HOOOOO!!!!!* **SOB!!!*
My poor Boris. They say with a recon head, the parts total will be £2300.
What to do..... !?!? Hmmm... It may come to the point of repair and sell. or just repair the majors and sell, but either way. I think I am going to have to fine a new Boris...

I don't think so the fender has a much larger engine bay with better air flow around the motor. dosen't have the engine pan on the bottom Looks like a larger radiator and inner cooler than in the disco. and easier to service. So with more air flow around the motor, and a little slower highway speed the motor should last longer. On the Mileage survey that Hippo did looks like the defenders put on more miles than the rest of the LR family. Also looking over the threads on repairs looks like a 3-1 ratios of head and radiator problems with the disco having the most trouble( with the fender being the 1)I am seriously considering a 110.. Probably a 2000 model county pack.. At least the seats will be a little softer! But, I have to say, I think it will be the same problems.. It still has the TD5 engine!!

Thanks for info ratty. You earned your chips today. Remember looking at turner engineering and seeing 2 different heads for td5. and wondering whyIf you look for a 2002 onwards you should minimise the risk of a cracked head. 1999-2001 were the early problematic engines.![]()
