hi guys,im looking at putting and
electric fan on my discoo 300tdi,the fitting kits that go through the rad are these safe or do they bugger the rad,the one i want is going between the engine and rad.
thanks
richard

the only reason i could see for fitting electric fan as viscous arent that dear to renew and offer more even cooling in that they dont just cool when systems hot ,thru rad fixings are common and are fine if fitted correctly and fan assembly cant move and chafe allthough i prefer not to as it dosent seem right ,but never seen a problem with them

why would a fan cooling, when the engine isnt up to temperature, be a good thing?

What James means i think is that the viscous is moving air constantly even when freewheeling, unlike an electric fan.
Heat soak is less of an issue with a viscous fan.

Bollix!
what is there to stop you running an electric all the time?
yu dont get heat soak when the engine is running, usually, because there is airflow over the engine.
The benefit of an electric fan over a viscous one is that you can control when it is on or off.
ie fan on when the engine is off. fan off until engine is up to temperature. fan on with engine off.
all options unavailable with a viscous fan.

there less thermal shock with viscous fan, and the only reason which i meant to put is electric is good for wading obviously as it can be switched off and no threat of blades been puleed toward rad ,i doubt youd measure fuel saving probably on par with them magnets (bugger all),electric is driven and so puts exral load on alt, not free energy

running an electric fan all the time couteracts your supposed fuel saving ,its just one of those things that people do cos they can unless you go deep wading pointless expense, viscous works perfect cheap to replace which on 10 yearold car not unexpexted spend your money on better brakes ,new genuine ball joints ,new pas box,new bushes something that improves the vehicle

the whole purpose of an electric fan is that it is controllable, unlike a viscous fan which cannot be turned on or off.
If yu were to have an electric fan on all the time, it would defeat the purpose of having one, but the point is - you could if you wanted to. you try turning a viscous fan off!

And I suppose driving through water is pretty bad thermal shock then in that case?
yes it is but how often do most do it unlike normal daily driving ,im not saying its an instant thing ,but can be ,why put extra strain on system especially system with different expansion rates

pity LR didnt think about that with the K series then.

I think yu are missing the point completely, the benefit of an electric fan over a viscous is that it does everything a viscous fan will do and more!
