Lets face it, James 90% of vehicles now have electric fans. Amongst other reasons, this is done to improve engine efficiency, and warm up times.
they have electric fans as they are tranverse engines with no room and too much complication to put mechanical drive ,warm up times is done through thermostat, im not saying it will kill your engine but reason used for doing it are usually bollocks ,as i said before spend money on something more important or effective but its one of those bloke things wont pay for new brake disc eg but will shell out for electric fan

How dare you!
How do you know the OP hasnt done all those things!
You are jumping to conclusions without knowing the facts. He just asked about fitting a fan!

And I got my two fans off the disco I just scrapped so were free!!
And my brakes work well!!

Not picking an arguement but assumption is the mother of all **** ups

no but true though i can see why for deep wading,or in situations like disco 200 tdi coversions, lifting for ground clearance etc electric fan,on std vehicle is necessary or improvement ,because its something you can do

What does 200 disco conversions have to do with the OP??

i answered his question about fitting fan with through rad fixings in my first post, the rest is just my responses to others points ,if it wernt that way most threads would be 2 posts long, but discussion might help other people in whichever way they choose,i have experience and opinions as others so you will have to put up with them,i enjoy discusing things with people like mhm and others as i know enough to be right in my view and enough to also listen to others, putting them altogether expands knowledge

thats where we differ - coz i dont know I am right - and have been proved wrong more than once.

re-phrase that - I am never wrong..............

just occasionally mistaken ;).

no not saying iam allways right i do make mistakes and get things wrong ,but if the more you learn the more you listen too as subjects get larger the more you get to learn about them

I don't see any reason to change to an electric fan over the viscous unit unless you are going into deep water.

hi guys,im looking at putting and
electric fan on my discoo 300tdi,the fitting kits that go through the rad are these safe or do they bugger the rad,the one i want is going between the engine and rad.
thanks
richard

ok well nice debate over the issue sorry for causing this to all,the reason im looking at an electric fan is due to the fact when i tug my caravan up long inclines the 300 goes right up to the start of the red,if in 3rd or 4th gear the engine revs higher but the 300 is moving at a lot slower pace so i end uphaving to put the heaters on in the car to help speed the cooling time as i dont like the engine that hot its not good for my engine, checked and replaced water pump,thermostat,50/50 coolant n water, new rad 12 month ago,de egr and de cat standard fuel setting on pump, head gasket checked all ok,full service every 6 month, all filters and oils, and yip my brakes are sweet lol.other than this temp never moves above half on gauge round town or motorway, and believe me it gets some hammer at times,if theres any thing ive missed then please let me know i just thought this was the best idea for the hill issue with the caravan,
cheers
richard
p.s.reading all this has made my night lol but its also yet another fine learning curve.

feel your rad is hot all over its surface as more likely isnt cooling over most of it ,your trying to cover up a fault ,very common fault even if rad looks perfect i bet its only hot on side with hose

rad is same all over, hoses same everyone i know with the same disco have the same problem when tugging a caravan up big hills, there definatly isnt a blockage in the rad or air lock any other suggestions

thats why you use rolled up news paper you could try turning it after switching engine off while still hot ,there not that dear new,err2266 £20 or £40

ok cheers ile check it on wednesday my day off and ile let you know how i get on..ile also double check rad just to be sure.
cheers
rich
