I got a Hi lift with a Lift mate, this can be used to lift the wheels so you can put someting under them if you grounded out, ie waffle boards,

My thoughts are any recovery equipment is better then none, and they all have their place in the motor.

But would def go with the Hi lift, for its alround ability, just learn to use it first.
 
the 4 ton pullers are the same as the 2 ton pullers. bit of a con!

i bought a 4ton and its handy enough for 20 quid, but my mate bought a 2 ton for his mini tractor at work, turns out its the same item, just that his can be used single or double line pull, whereas mine is locked in, so it can only be used double line.

its a PITA cos double line is slower pulling, and im intelligent enough to know which way to use it. wish id known this cos then i would have bought the more useable 2 ton item!
 
Like i say, I had a 2 ton puller cheap off ebay, when i needed it was well used and worked a treat... it is only a one time use thing though as its now propper shagged.... for a little bit more id get a high lift and use that now any day!!!
 
So as a Freelander owner who takes his Freelander off road, I always have other vehicles close by to help wiff recovery. (stuck twice and recovered by slittys both times). An electric winch would be a waste due to probable no usage. A hi lift don't work on a Freelander, to lift it, so a hand winch is the option for me I'm thinking? If so, should I go for the 4 tons option wiff single or double line pull, or the 2 ton wiff just double? Or still get a hi lift but only use it for recovery? thanks.

whichever you get bear in mind how/where you gonna store it

a highlift is heavy and not easy to use as a recovery winch
bear in mind you can only recover the length of the highlift at a time before you have to rejig it and set it up again for the next pull:eek:
 
a tirfor is the best for winching only, theyre a fabulous winch, period. however theyre also quite heavy and a thick spool of cable is heavier and bulky too. genuine tirfors are VERY expensive, but tmax do a copy which is not too bad for occasional use.

a hi lift is great for various purposes but yep, very heavy and limited use. you can make/get adaptors etc for a hi lift, so that you can jack your freelander. you can either put a short webbing strap through a wheel and lift the wheel, or you can get chain with hooks that can hook under the sills and jack the body direct.

the hand puller is cheap, kinda cheerful, and very useable for light recoveries. i have used mine as a secondary pull to help awkward recoveries.

go for the 2 ton as it is the same strength as the 4 ton but more versatile cos it has the single line pull.

my advice is tirfor if you want a serious recovery tool, a hand puller (or two) if you want a cheap item that may come in handy. if you buy the rolson hand puller you get a nice moulded plastic carry case. the pullers are all the same but rolson supply the carry case too. very handy for keeping in the boot. as above, i'd buy two :)
 
I've got a 800kg YALE (Tirfor type) winch in the garage with cable, only thing its missing is the handle.

I dont want it, someone can have it for some beer tokens. If you come n get it.
