P38 - air to coils?

COILS ARE TERRIBLE!! avoid them. i have 2 p38's one on coils one on air and there is NO comparison between the 2. ride, handling or comfort there is no competition go with air.

There's a thread on rr.net along similar lines (re ride quality).

It seems that a lot of P38s seem to be suffering at the moment. I wonder if there is a single item that has just got to the age where it starts to deteriorate on all P38s....

I will gues its the bits NO one wants to change - the hub ball joints. Word on the street is these are only good for 100k miles. Just a thought.

Don't know about that, it's a fairly straight forward job IF you happen to have around £2,000.00 worth of special tools. Where do these tool manufacturers get their prices from?

I bought some hub joints expecting the very same thing.....contributing to bad ride...

Took the P38 to be checked over by a good mechanic friend.....he said the hubs are in great condition, no play whatsoever......vehicle has done 122k miles....
The new hub joints are sat on a shelf alongside a few other things I did not need.....

Gas shocks.....NONE directional tyres (Pirelli's) and replacement bushes sorted out the bad ride....

Lets face it, all this bull**** about a better ride on coils is just that BULL****. EAS is a quantum leap better than coils. People who complain about wallowy ride should change their shockers. You get exactly the same wallowy ride on coils IF your shocks are knackered. Air springs have exactly the same function as coil springs. EAS automatically adjusts for vehicle load also for vehicle speed, to stabilise it. Coils do none of this and are only fitted because the owner cannot do simple repairs to what in essence is a very simple system. There are very few EAS systems that cannot be repaired for less than half the price of a coil convertion. So there.:D:D:D

The superior characteristics of air suspension is the reason that many heavy trucks these days ride on air as do most semi trailers.:D:D:D

Funny though that Jaguar have only recently started using air suspension when the likes of Mercedes have used it for years on the S class. They always said they could not better coils for the ride.

I don't know about that. When my ex missus had a coil fitted it used to hurt my willy no end. Well on the end actually.:p:p:p

I'm not complaining about wallowy ride, I'm just sick of being thrown about by every little ripple in the road. I've had new shocks, new bushes, new steering damper, marginal improvement. An ancient RR Classic I drove rode far better than my P38, hence the question re coils.
Thanks.

And you think coils will change that do you?

ive never been impressed with disco or rrc or p38 air suspension,it doesnt do what it says on the tin ,but everyones idea of ride is different

With EAS the ride is automatically compensated for no matter what the load. It is self levelled no matter what the distribution of the load. With coils you cannot hope to do that. With coils there always has to be a compromise, you cannot get them to suit all operating conditions and load variables. EAS can do this to a very great degree. It can be compared to a push bike, coils are a three speed bike, EAS is an eighteen speed bike. EAS covers far more variable conditions than even a well chosen set of coils can ever do. EAS gives a far more stabil platform over a much wider range of loads and speeds than coils can do.

I completely agree. i cant understand why its still in debate. i have driven on both and there leagues apart.

Neither can i my friend it really is a no brainer. It really is like comparing a Ford Escort Cosworth RS Turbo to a model T and coming up with the model T being a better car. Maybe because the model T is easier to fix.

Be serious wammers, debate is coils or air and some of us think that coils are better and more reliable, I certainly would not change back. As I said before go and try one on coils before changeing and see what you think. Have not seen any RS on air yet can't think of a ford with EAS can you.
