Got a weird 1 today... went to my mates house after a frantic phone call, basicaly his dse drives fine but its started to stall when you select reverse, sometimes its fine and selects fine and reverses fine, other times it selects reverse but has no power, the engine just wont rev up in reverse, you have to select low range so you can go backwards, (its an auto box) its an R reg and has only 120,000 miles on the clock, is there anything i should look for or advise him to check, many thanks people...:confused:

there is no easy fix unless box out and fixed i would think clutch pack is burnt out ,can check to see if oil is blackening by draining a capful out

if engine wont rev surley its engine related not clutch pack now if it was reving and not moving in reverse as mine done once then i would say clutch pack

Yeh im not sure about the clutch pack as it doesnt rev up at all, its more like an electrical problem, yet it is selecting reverse as the rev lights are coming on and the revs do drop ever so slightly as it would when it selects gear... it just wont rev up to move the rangie but yet its fine in low range :confused: ive had a quick search for other threads with the same probs but cant really find anything.

fair enough ,engine revs are different to gear box unless the gear box has clutches grabbing forward gears while selecting rev ,i would still check oil for colour and burning smell,as far as i know theres nothing that could alter throttle response between forward or rev gears, low box would overcome faulty clutches

Thats a fair enuf comment, i just thort and hope'ed it would of been summer simple like an electrical fault or some sort of relay on the auto box thats sticking open, my mate has had nothing but trouble with the rangie and its a shame as its a real nice motor, hes allready sorted the EAS and the ABS problem, the dam thing still gets hot tho and has had a new rad just before he got it, i suspect it could have semi serious engine issues alltho it has been alot better since i bleed the cooling system...

Just thinking aloud.
A DSE has an electronic throttle so 'something' could be interfering with the signal.
However there isn't a postion on the gear selector that stops you revving the engine.
Have you tried revving the engine with it in neutral and park? No logical reason just to see if it's something to do with the selector. I know that there's no logical reason but this doesn't seem a logical fault, especially when you say that it's intermittent.

Then I'd either be reading faults or trying disconnecting the battery for a re-set.

It's a weird one.

Yeh it revs up fine in park and neutral, it is itermitant and thats whats baffeling me i just cant think what would be doing this fault, it does seem to be a tad worse when its hot (engine) but surley if its the clutch pack then it would be the same hot or cold... dam auto boxes !! im goin back upto it in an hour or so and check the oil, i did check the level but it was fine it was late'ish tho so il check it again and see if theres any colour change,:p

i've been mucking about with fip timing on mine this weekend, and when i had it slightly retarded i had the exact same no reverse symptons. has your mate made any changes in fuel setup?

I think the first thing should be to read the fault codes. The auto box ECU has a line to call for reduced torque from the engine on gear changes, so I would guess it is possible for the auto box ECU to be doing something wrong? I reckon James Martins answer is nearest, or maybe a solenoid valve sticking, this from my little experience with my auto problem.

Jonbill il find out about that as i think the owner before had just had summert done with the time'ing chain, but this could of just been a "selling point" as theres no way of checking, and Datatek im gona try and borrow my mates crappy halfords code reader and hope for the best, thatnks for the input.:D

Has any 1 got any pics of the solenoid valve on the autobox so i can clean um or check um, or even just a breif discription... pleaseeeeeeeeeeee

Solenoid valve on the autobox????? There are 2 electrically operated valves in the valve block inside the autobox. Might be easy to deal with if you are experienced or if it's on the bench

i wouldnt start taking any thing out of valve block unless your used to doing it ,for one thing these have close tolerances and easy to bugger ,the other theres nothing you can do ,clean valve block by running fresh oil through ,atf is highly detergent and will clean it ,if theres much crap in box it wont last long anyhow,

Hmmmmmm, im experianced in everything else but not gearboxes (auto's) i normally pass on any customers to a local auto box specailist but as hes a mate of mine i thort id have a go and try and save him some money, oh well looks like im gona have to give him the bad news, thanks for your help.:)
