TD5 engine question

I noticed that the TD5 engine in our Defender is very responsive off tickover, by that I mean when you press the gas pedal it revs instantly, like a petrol engine.
So if you want to pull out of a side road (into a gap in traffic say)there's no delay, press the gas pedal, instant RPM, clutch up, and you are off.
I also have a Ford Transit Connect which is fitted with the TDCi diesel, same as Mondeo/Focus etc.
When you press the gas pedal on that it takes 2-3 seconds to rev up from idle, it's nowhere near as responsive as the TD5.
My brother has a BMW 120 diesel and that's the same...slow to respond.
Why is the TD5 so much better? The Ford TDCi engine in my Transit is sh*te in comparison. What's the Defender Puma engine like? Is it any better?
Both vehicles (Transit Connect and Defender) have done about the same mileage, 25,000.

It does....press the pedal and the Defender rocks with the torque as it revs up.
We've had it from almost new, it was a dealer demonstrator.

I had the Transit engine "chipped" and while it was faster once it got going, it was no better off idle.

My TD5 is quicker than a quick thing off idle. I'll put it up against a Puma any day of the week. Virtually instant throttle response and pulls like a train right upto the rev limiter. Best diesel engine I've ever owned and I've had more than a few in my time. It has its quirks but what engine does not?

I've driven a Puma powered 90 and in my opinion its absolute ****e. Its basically a Ford Tran**** engine bolted in to the Defender purely to comply with emmision regulations. It has a different operating envelope which makes it slow to respond, way too noisy, and down on torque compared to a TD5.

Could it be to do with the 'Fly by wire' yokie the td5 has??

right from the first tickle
without touching the throttle or slipping the clutch you can pull away in first as well
would have a td5 90 over a v8 any day

i can pull away in my td5 just using the clutch and no gas but to pull away quickly i need the revs up, would that be due to my 35/ 12.5 tyres

The Ford engine (in my van,1.8TDCi 110ps) is a waste of time at low RPM, you put your foot on the gas and it lumbers up to 1500rpm, bring up the clutch and pull away, if it drops under 1500 it bogs down and you have to press the clutch down and stand on the gas, then it takes 3 seconds to rev up again before you can bring the clutch up, by which time the car you pulled out in front of is right up your arse blowing his horn and who can blame him.

Once it gets going the Ford engine is great, pulls like a train, in fact if you get it right it can waste most things up to about 40mph.

The TD5 does not suffer from this low RPM lethargy.
