The time has come to replace all 4 tyres on my FL. It's currently running on Michelin Syncrones 215/65 16 fitted from new. FL has done 53k so not bad wear out of them I reckon.

Anyway I want to fit a set of BF Goodrich ATs to it but want some thoughts on the size to fit. Do I go for the same width but different aspect ratio eg 215/70 16 or do I go for wider tyres 225/70 16?

I know the slight increase in aspect ratio from 65 to 70 on the original width won't make that much of a difference, only an inch bigger or so in overall diameter so clearance won't be a problem. The wider tyres tho increase this overall diameter to over 2" bigger. I've read elsewhere that they should fit without any trouble but will have quite an effect on speedo readings. Also the ATs are R speed rated whereas the Michelins are H rated. Not bothered by top speed much, besides where in this country do you ever drive at 100 mph+! Will the speed rating make much difference anyway?

So looking for thoughts or ideas from anyone else who has done similar!

Many thanks

I've personally got 215/70/r16's in General Grabber AT2's on mine, i'd recommend going up a size to 70 profile if you want to use it for going off the tarmac at all.

The speed rating may make a difference to your insurance co. - and the Old Bill if you get a roadside inspection.
