    painting/rebushing

Just done this. Degreased it fully and then a rotary wire brush, 2 coats black hammerite. Don't paint inside where the ball joint slips in. Smear of copper slip is all that is required. Same also if you take the arms off ie dont paint machined faces.

Me Disco's a wee bit rusty...

Looks a bit like amperage is low and your gas shield isn't working. Try increasing both ie amperage up, put wire feed speed down and increase shield gas flow rate. It is surprising how much amperage you actualy need with MIG compared to stick given the wire sizes involved.

    Re Bushing.... who's done it?

I bought two railway sleepers and cut them into lengths about 400mm long and packed them 3 high under all four corners of the chassis on my concrete workshop floor. Very stable and won't go anywhere when working underneath. A ramp would be better but slabs of timber are cheap and safe. Tried a...

HELP cant get my brakes back

Well thanks to all on this thread it has saved me lots of wasted time. I read about having the rear calipers on the wrong way around last night, and low and behold when I checked I had done the same thing myself! Wont do it again though. Took about 20 minutes this morning to swap them over and...

HELP cant get my brakes back

My experience of industrial pipework (and even domestic plumbing) is to vent (bleed) the air from the highest points in the circuit. The problem being discussed sounds very much like trapped air, it can be a real bugger to get out. The Haynes manual just refers to bleeding from what must be...

300 tdi rear brake pipes in one go

It looks like it is one piece from the ABS unit in the engine bay to the bracket at the rear where the brake hoses are connected. I don't intend to join (cut and flare) any steel pipe. I will run new copper nickel from ABS to rear bracket. Possibly it is just too long to do in one piece and I...

300 tdi rear brake pipes in one go

About to renew all of the rear brake pipes on my 300tdi 1998 auto. Using 3/16" Copper Nickel alloy. I have a full day tomorrow so would like to get it all done if I can. Old steel pipes are well corroded. Has anyone tried (and suceeded) to fit the complete run from inside the engine bay (ABS...

Which glue for broken plastic trim

Hi, I don't think they are ball sockets but maybe thats their name? They are small plastic lugs about 8mm x 8mm square maybe 3mm thick formed as part of the bigger plastic grille panel. They have sheet steel inserts to hold the self tapping screw as it goes through the headlight, and into the lug.

Which glue for broken plastic trim

I have searched the threads but surprisingly can't find anything on repairing broken plastic trim. A small lug on the plastic trim that supports the headlight unit has cracked off. I have tried to glue it back on with epoxy etc but it just comes off as soon as I try to re-fit the healight...

    My Opinion of Paddock Spares

I have found Shop 4 Auto Parts | Welcome, very good for price and delivery so far. Although their range is still limited. Got my Disco 1 swivels on special offer at 50% less than the prices offered by the usual suspects. My experience with Paddocks is neither good or bad.

Swivel pins, will someone give me a sane answer.

A job I have just completed. If you have the cash then just go for it and replace the bearings and swivel seals. I find the biggest headache is having it off the road and stripped down and the ammount of time it all takes. For a few more quid you can replace the parts that wear and be certain...

    sidestep just fell off :-(

That happened to me as well. I just smoothed off the jagged edges and later on bought a set of tree sliders to replace the manky old sidesteps. Does the job and looks smarter too.

Secure brake pipes to rear axle

Replacing the brake pipes on my Discovery. Is there a good way to fix new brake pipe clips to the rear axle? Anyone ever tack welded on a stud for a P clip to fix to? I Dont want to bugger up the the metallurgy of the axle, but maybe this is ok? I don't think tie wraps are the way to go.

300tdi Front brake caliper hydraulic ports

Many thanks Discool, I will try to tee the two pipes together, or machine up a simple tapped block that will connect them. I was uncertain if I needed more flow of fluid ie, 2 pipes feeding the caliper rather than 1. At least I dont have to change the caliper!

300tdi Front brake caliper hydraulic ports

I have (mistakenly) ordered vented disc brakes with matching calipers for my Disco 1 300tdi 1998 automatic. The dics and calipers both fit and so I have installed them. However although the calipers (old and new ones) are both Lockheed and both have the same numbers on the castings, the old...
