The rpm at 70 sounds way to high, standard wheel size and standard gearing it should be at about 2800 rpm if I remember right ( not had a standard disco for some time and don't usually go up to 70mph, I'm running a 1.4 ratio transfer box and 35" tyres ) if your rev counter is playing up its hard...

Try a run out without the fuel cap on, this will eliminate the fuel cap vent being the problem ( vacuum in the tank fault ) have come across this before as work as a breakdown tech

change the diff ratio's to keep the low range correct or put a 1.6 ratio transfer box in, this will be ok in high but in low ratio it will be a little high

If the pad had fallen through sounds like the caliper has corroded to excess, pad could of moved nd jammed causing the problem, had a similar prob with mine so fitted new calipers and all was good.

Starter motor? Or flat battery? Just a start for you to check, could be muck got in your starter or if rev counter stopped working ( pick up off alternator ) your alternator might not be charging e.g. Flat battery P.s. nice intro
