1st of all im new to the site, so a hello to everybody...

My question is what the pros and cons of the 90 and the disco for off roading. was going to modify the landy with decent mud grabber tyres, body lift and snorkel to start along with any other mods that go along with these starter points. but my main question is what is the better off road? i'm lead to believe the defender and the disco have the same chassis i read on here but don't know how true this is.

any advice be greatly appriciated. and keep it clean i know these question can cause arguments lol

Welcome to the loonyzone! :)
Intros usually go in the Intro section, but you are here now! ;)

90/110 or Defender may be slightly better off road, but both they and the Disco are much more capable than the average driver will ever use.

Defender are a bit more agricultural, Discos are cheaper and a bit more comfortable. More room in a D2 than Def or D1.

If you are new to landrovers, I wouldnt waste money on mods, the standard vehicle is a good all rounder. Just get used to owning and operating a landy, if you like it, and maybe after a few years want to drive in competition etc. might be woth thinking about mods then? They may put your insurance premiums up too, especially if you are younger driver.

i have done a good share of off road as im ex force's and i know what the 90/110 are capable of off road and i know what they are like on road ( not the most comfortable motors) but as a family man i was steering towards a disco, but my heart lays with a 90 with the mods would this be a wise decision, and the old woman will have to use her car if we go out as a family and mine will be the toy lol.

As I said, I dont like mods, they may improve one thing, but there is always a downside too. The only mods I like on a landrover are axle lockers and more aggresive tyres. And I have been driving on farms and forestry trails for 30 years, and we live a mile off tarmac.

A disco is far more practical as a family car, Def hold their value much better. Both are prone to rust! :(

This question is posted about every three months without fail, if you tyr forum search function, you will probably get a lot of info, but I would guess pretty much what I have said, Def may be slightly better, Disco is a lot cheaper! ;)

what would be a down side to a body lift on a disco for example, obviously upside be ground clearance and bigger tyres...

would it be worth getting chassis treated and how much work and pound notes would this entail.

Lift can make roll worse even to the point of being dangerous. And height restrictions which can be an issue when get to exit of a multi-storey.
Rust treatment. Maybe £150 for materials then lots of hard dirty work to do it yourself. Up to £500+ to get someone to do it. Better make sure the chassis is solid first otherwise it's a bit of a waste.

Everyone's a critic o_O
He's a moderator, mod you see. So when you say you don't like mods....
It's what passes for humour in their world.

Body or suspension lift = higher centre of gravity meaning worse on-road handling, increased wear on suspension bushes and propshafts.

Big knobbly tyres = more on road noise, use more fuel, potential to damage lovely scenic green lanes.

Just a few cons.

so in a nut shell, no to a lift kit!!! but A/T for light off road use and road, and big knobbles for pay and drive days really.

just looked up on a website a disco 2 has a 210mm ground clearence and a 90 has 190mm dose this sound about right?

It depends on your driving. I had a disco 1, 300tdi. Only mod was insa saharas in standard size - not bad grip but noisy on road. Changed to BFGoodrich all terrain in a slightly bigger 245/70/16 and never got stuck anywhere green Laning in Derbyshire. Never felt the need for a lift kit. If I was doing pay and play days I might have lifted it but at the expense of road manners. There's plenty of people who lift there's and fit 285 MUDs and are happy with it but really, you need to get to know just how capable it is as standard before you start modding it to suit your ability and the type of terrain you are facing. I loved my disco but it had to go as it was a shed. I only really ended up with my current 110 through drunken ebay bidding (although not sure why I've since spent 3.5k on it!). And no amount of body or suspension lift alone will increase ground clearance to the diffs. You need to fit bigger tyres after the lift, or fit portal axles (eggpensive!)

No sadly it's not that easy (surprised?) if you want to fit BIG tyres then especially on a disco you will probably need a lift or at very least a "trim/cut" around the edges.
Decide which you prefer, buy it run it the way you got it for a while and alter as you go along/find it's limits/what you want to change.
I got a 90 sometimes I wish I got a 110 for the extra space, but I also like how short it is and can build/buy a trailer. Sometimes I wish I'd got a disco because they are so cheap and really like how some are modded and the comfort level but after commuting through winter in the middle of the night by bike for years a roof and doors is a big step up in comfort for me and I like modding the inside of my 90 and well it's what I've got now :)

BFGoodrich AT was my 1st choice of tyres. so i think for practicallity i'll get a disco (family purposes) with BFG AT, maybe sum and fuel tank, and track rod gaurds to start with.

depends how far you want to go with a disco :)

Which one?
Diesel/petrol?
Auto/manual?
V8/200tdi/300tdi/TD5 etc?
3dr/5dr/commercial?
Aspirin/paracetamol? :)
