    Freelander transmission problem

Hi I am looking for help on a transmission problem on a 1999 1,8 Freelander with 48,000 miles on the clock. I have two faults that may not be connected: 1) The rear drivers side tyre has worn on just the car side. Centre tread ok bur car side down to canvas. 2) There is a transmission...

    Transmission Judder

Hi My 1999 Freelander suffers from a transmission judder on start-up. Happens on first start-up. Does not happen once wamed up. Feels like judder is at rear not at clutch?

    1.8 new h/g

New bottom rail - have heard the smoke screen story but also that stronger to take the new higher torque head bolts. I am still using the latest Rover/Payen gaskets but time will tell. If only we could time warp + 5 years the truth would be known.

    1.8 new h/g

You could fit the new LandRover PRT (thermostat) + the larger expansion tank as well as giving the rad/engine a good flush & refill with the correct anti-freeze. Otherwise let the sleeping sleep.

SBS light on after fitting new rack

OK, my fault, I think I have rotated the steering column whilst fitting a new rack. A new airbag rotary switch is VERY expensive. Ideas on a cheap fix appreciated.

    Head Bolts

LR supply new spec head bolts to use with the new gasket. These are fitted to a higher torque and need the new ladder.

    Enhanced heat shield

The heat shield may need to be larger then!

    Enhanced heat shield

switching engines is not an easy option - not as original for resale, wiring loom + ECU issues. With HGF rebuilding the K series to latest spec is probably best but not cheap option. New LR multi layer gasket, stronger botton rail & head bolts, modified PRT thermostat + inevitable head skim...

1.8 K series, what else would have such dire HF's

    Enhanced heat shield

There is a new heat shield that fits over the exhaust 2146K01 for £18. Should reduce heat transfer to radiator. It needs a bodge bolt on one side for the old manifold - I used an exhaust clamp. Plus some lock wire at the bottom. Should be useful in reducing HGF risk.

    Head gasket mod

The Land Rover head gasket is said to be less tolerant of any liner height issues. The comments are only for the 1.8 K series engine. However Payen do saver shims for a range of engines so could be a good "get out of jail" card in any situation where the head has been skimmed to near or even...

    Head gasket mod

This HGF problem is a big issue - The MGF BBS has loads on this as well. The new L/R gasket is more than a gasket - as above new higher torque bolts & ladder so a big job to do & no history to prove if it works. The thermostat mod is probably a must do but for those of us with older models...

    Thermostat KV6

The K series has an impressive power to weight ratio - one of the best but the early engines had some design defects like the plastic head locating dowels. I am not sure it is AWD by itself but the extra load within the Freelander setup would have benefited from additional cooling.

    Thermostat KV6

I think the HGF issue is the special "feature" requiring a "major" service ("new engine") for the 1.8 K Series. Other engines do not have this as a "routine" service requirement.

Upgraded radiator on 1 1.8 Air Con Freelander

Upgrading the fan is not a good answer. The radiator surface area needs to be larger so the existing air flow keeps the temp. down.
