Can you swap camshafts between different 1.8 k Freelander engines - are they all the same ? I note that the cam carrier is unique to each head but I can't see anything regarding camshafts.

A friend of mine, who is ex Landrover, has said that if he suspected a HGF he would tweak the headbolts ie tighten them a bit more - say 20 degrees. I have also read of people doing the same. So, out of interest, are the headbolts at maximum tension when the engine is hot or cold ?

Any ideas how to remove the grey deposit/residue left on the head from a new type MLS gasket ? I am guessing that it's the stuff that glues the shim to the head. It's being done as part of a valve replacement due to a slipped belt so no need to skim the head.
