    Camshaft swop

Can you swap camshafts between different 1.8 k Freelander engines - are they all the same ? I note that the cam carrier is unique to each head but I can't see anything regarding camshafts.

    Head Bolts retensioning/torquing

A friend of mine, who is ex Landrover, has said that if he suspected a HGF he would tweak the headbolts ie tighten them a bit more - say 20 degrees. I have also read of people doing the same. So, out of interest, are the headbolts at maximum tension when the engine is hot or cold ?

What's the best way of testing if the impeller is still on the pump ?

Classic Landrover - which one to buy

I now live in Ireland & I am considering getting a classic for everyday light use. It has to be 1979 or earlier to avail of €50 tax & no dreaded NCT (MOT). I am a reasonable home mechanic, I have to be as I drive a Freelander 1.8, but I live by the sea so corrosion is a big factor. I used...

Level in coolant bottle - overheating

I have a strange set of symptoms. I recently changed the head gasket on my 1.8 as part of a head rebuild (snapped cambelt). Everything has been fine for 3 months. Now the engine overheats within the first couple of miles & the bottom hose stayed cold. I checked the, new type inline stat &...

Timing Belt Tracking & touching rear cover.

Started the engine after a head rebuild & everything was fine but after a while I could hear a worrying noise ! The timing belt has tracked towards the rear (towards the head) & it is touching the rear cover about half way between the crankshaft & the exhaust cam sprocket. I can't see any...

Old head gasket residue - how to remove ?

Any ideas how to remove the grey deposit/residue left on the head from a new type MLS gasket ? I am guessing that it's the stuff that glues the shim to the head. It's being done as part of a valve replacement due to a slipped belt so no need to skim the head.

    Replacement Catalytic Converters 1.8

Does anyone have experience of using non Landrover CC's ?. I failed an emissions test & the mechanic fitted a Cat made by Eurocat Catalytic Converters from European Exhaust&Catalyst Ltd. My emissions went up !. I have been told that the original CC was over engineered - maybe that's why they...

    Rear Suspension Bushes

According to my test report I have to change my nearside rear "axle & wishbone bushes". According to my trusty Haynes these look easy but experience has taught me that nothing is easy with a Freelander. So any tips ?. Do they come individually or in a set per wheel ?. Is it likely that...

    Emission problems with 1.8

My 2000 1.8 Freelander has a failed an emissions test with a Lambda of 1.07 (needs to be 0.97 to 1.03) & a CO of .61% (needs to be below .3%). Will I have to go to a main dealer or can any competent mechanic solve this ?

    Engine temperature alarm

I have noticed that some of the Aussie landrover guys fit coolant temperature alarms. Given all the 1.8 freelander problems has anyone tried one of these: Haydn Coolant Alarms - TM-2 Digital Temperture Gauge/Alarm (Powered by CubeCart) Seems like it could be a good idea in that you can...

    Coolant leak by alternator.

My 2000 Freelander 1.8 has a coolant leak that produces a fine spray around the back of the alternator. It seem too high to be HG & is close to the exhaust manifold. Is there anything else, other than cracked head !!!!, around that area that could be leaking ?. There is no evidence of...
