On the 3.5 I have known the timing gears to slip due a nylon tooth breaking off the cam sproket. Try loosing the distributor and turning it slowly whilst someone else cranks the engine and see if there is any improvement, i.e. running but lumpy as opposed to not running at all

Just make a note of how your existing belt is installed as when it's removed all you can see is a load of pulleys. The tensioner wheel has quite a pull on it so make sure you get your spanner as close to the engine side as possible as once the belt is realeased, the travel left on the tensioner...

You will probably find that the glass has come away from the metal frame. If I remember correctly, this is glued on to the frame but the frame can rust. Try pushing gently on the fram to see if you still get the same lift as when you press the glass
