Series 3 2.25L petrol engine in trouble......? (timing chain?)

Got crankshaft sprocket off after persistent persuasion with a large crowbar wedged behind and lots of tapping with a hammer from different angles. As the timing was lost anyway I was able to spin it around and keep going from different angles. Took a while but get there. "to the man with a...

Series 3 2.25L petrol engine in trouble......? (timing chain?)

Will do that. Think I'll replace the tensioner as no desire to have to pull it all to bits again'

Series 3 2.25L petrol engine in trouble......? (timing chain?)

I was wrong on the valves. They look flush but they're not. If I carefully turn the camshaft they move. OK so I am going to replace both cogs, tensioner, chain, crankshaft oil seal. Do I need to remove & check pushrods & valves?

Series 3 2.25L petrol engine in trouble......? (timing chain?)

Got the cover off this morning and the chain has indeed snapped! Dealt with this before on a Ford transit engine (belt) but never a series engine. One thing that's struck me is the valves are all aligned. See photo. Is this normal? Any comments / experience on repair and reassembly? Looks...

Series 3 2.25L petrol engine in trouble......? (timing chain?)

Hi, She cut out on me a few days ago. No trouble leading up to it. Assumed fuel starvation - tank was low and I was on my way to the petrol station anyway. Put 10L in from a jerrycan, primed and... nothing. Persevered a bit, gave up got the wife out to tow me the mile or so home. Safely at...

    Disco 2 XZY switch issues

Yes I think it's a crossed B now I look again. Slightly better close up attached. Damn. Will read through the other postings. I did get a lot of horn tooting but assumed unrelated as I'd previously had alarm issues and don't lock it for that reason. My kate locked it and that's when the horn...

    Disco 2 XZY switch issues

Hi all, been having issues as follows: - slow / non-change of gear - limp mode - revs but no power Looking around on here and elsewhere xyz switch seemed a likely culprit so have taken it out (wow that's awkward), opened it up. It's the type that looks like this: (this isn't mine but same type)...

Fuel lift pump to engine block part number help!

Hi I have an oil leak from the join between the square side cover that the fuel pump and the engine block so I'm going to replace the gasket. Spent an hour last night trying to find the part in my parts catalogue and online with no joy. Does anyone e know the part number? It's the item labelled...

    Metal chunks in sump

Hi, I got it running last night, let it warm up and then took the video with the rocker cover off. https://kapwi.ng/c/RhgPve3hxz All looks and sounds ok to me. Any views? Also checked compression 10bar / 140psi on 2x and 9.5 bar / 135psi on 2x. Ok I think. Valve clearances made small...

    Metal chunks in sump

I dropped the sump because it was leaking. Here's a photo of the plugs. Will be another week of so before I can reassemble and get it running.

    Metal chunks in sump

Here's my effort at fitting pic 3 bits together. Only superglued my fingers together twice lol. See photo. Total weight 43g. I can't get the other bits to fit but maybe just too mangled. There are two dimple profiles. I have tried to illustrate by drawing the profile. One has a shoulder the...

    Metal chunks in sump

Here's what I have with the soft oily shrapnel bits removed (see photos). 1. Three bits that fit together. 17g. Magnetic. Not the roller. 2. Brass bits not magnetic clearly from a brass slider. 0.6g 3. Bits from at least 1 round tappet. 41.4g. Can't fit them together. More circular bits than for...

    Metal chunks in sump

Bit more investigation this morning. There are chunks from at least 1 round slider, weight adds up to more than 43g. There is also a clearly identifiable tab from the brass slider. There are some chunks of oily filings welded together, and a few bits of what looks like rubber gasket. I've...

    Metal chunks in sump

Here's the video: https://kapwi.ng/c/aZZEUyHPNb Hard to tell if all are opening more / less than the others. I will do a bit more investigation on that.

    Metal chunks in sump

Weight of the bit is 67g. All valves seem to be working.... took a video but too big to post here.... Maybe best to reassemble, run it for a few months, drop sump again and see if any more appears?

    Metal chunks in sump

Thanks all. That looks like the part! Yes some are magnetic. Will take the rocker cover off and have a look. I've not had the vehicle long so don't know the history, but I was told by the last owner that the head was off and skimmed a few years ago. Engine seems to run fine as I said but I...

    Metal chunks in sump

Hi all, I decided to drop the sump pan on my s2a tonight. The photo shows what I found. Lots of fairly large chunks of metal. Can anyone identify the bits? Some are quite distinctive. Looks quite alarming. Should I be alarmed? Engine leaks a lot of oil but otherwise seems to run OK.
