Series III starting but cutting out when key released

Apologies for this question from a non mechanical person but I am having issues with my Series III. The landy starts but when I release the ignition key the engine cuts out. If I hold the key on, the engine will run and can be revved but as soon as key is released the engine dies. I'm thinking...

    Series Starter Motor Reconditioning

Does anyone know of a business near Helensburgh that would be able to recondition a Series 3 starter motor? I had suggestion of a place in Glasgow, Partick Auto Electronics, but unable to discuss as they appear to not answer their phone

Series 3 Oil Bath Air Filter Fitting

I currently have a pancake air filter on my S3 but would like to fit it back with the Oil Bath Air Filter. I have recently acquired the Oil Bath unit but have come across difficulty sourcing the 90degree metal fitting that connects hose to the carb. The question I have is : Is it required that...

Series 3 Axle Oil top up

I noticed oil on outer rim of rear wheel, checked breather and it was blocked soild. Replaced same and am now wondering if it would be OK to top up with SAE EP 80/90 as opposed to the stipulated SAE EP 90? I guess I am presuming that it is EP 90 that is already in there!!

I checked the unit with new bulb for continuity, across battery and earthing it, but to no avail. Got another unit and it...

Stainless steel or not stainless steel? --- that is the question

After having taken about 4hrs, having to use a mini hacksaw blade, to cut through the severely rusted bolts and nuts securing an ex bump stop mount on my Series 3, I am wondering if fitting the new bump stops using stainless steel nuts and bolts would be the way to go? Would this minimise the...

How Do I Determine the Year of Manufacture?

I have been trying to decipher the VIN and have got it down to that it is indeed a Series 3 88" petrol built in Solihull between 1979-84 but have been unable to narrow down to the year of manufacture. Any idea how I could narrow it down to a year?? I believe it may well have been a military...

    Classic Car Status

My Series 3 reached its 40th birthday on 29th April 2021. However the way I read the regs is that I cannot claim for MoT and RFL exemption until next year as the car has to be 40yo at the start of the year. Am I correct in my reading of this???

    Introduction

I have just joined the forum and, as a newbie, I will be looking to pick as many brains as possible. I have a 1981 Series 3 and am not very mechanically inclined but hope to become better in order that I can tinker with my Landy. Based in Scotland, so have to endure the cold and wet ----...
