Gear linkage roll pin keeps dropping out. Grrr...

Hi all. I've passed my Freelander 1.8 2003 petrol. manual gearbox to my daughter and in the last 3 months the gear linkage has come totally adrift from the gear selector at the gearbox end. A year ago I had a new UJ fitted for this because the selection had become floppy. I had no trouble...

    Flipping remote key fob. Grrrrr

Hi All. I have been shovelling CR2032 Litium batteries into my Freelander 1 key fob every two weeks for ages now and I can't seem to get to the bottom of the problem. When Igot the car the fob went faulty after a few weeks so I took it apart, and there was evidence of WD40 type fluid inside on...

2003 1.8 petrol Freelander, Gearchange notchy

Hi. I have a problem with this car in that changing gear is quite notchy unless you have the revs up to the 3k range. It's like a worn linkage issue but I've had the flimsy UJ linkage right under the gearstick changed because of worn bushes but it's no better. Someone told me that they are...

Freelander 2002 TD4 2 Litre Auto Spares or Repairs

Hi All. I have my Freelander up for sale since it's become too difficult for me to service now that the Auto gearbox has a real problem and the cooling system has a major leak somewhere. I’ve had the car for four years and loved every minute of it. The 2 litre* BMW engine starts first time...

Light blue smoke and lack of power going forward

Hi. I've not got the facilities anymore to do oil checks on the auto gearbox so every time I have to take it to the repair shop even though I know what a lot of faults are. I assumed the 4x4 specialist had checked for the oil level when I asked them to check the problem. Topside of the car I can...

What have you done to your Freelander today

Not many Warranty companies will cover cars older than 12 months. I'm just getting my money back after a dealer included it with my Freelander purchase last week on a 16 yr old car. Would have been a waste of time. Good luck.

Propshaft and wandering steering and sloppy gearstick.

Thanks all. Took it to a mechanic and he put it over the pit. He found the following: Front prop shaft UJ worn close to the IRD. Rear nearside driveshaft popped out of the diff a bit so he pushed it back in. The worst of all and what I was thinking all along is the rear NS tyre is a 205 and...

Propshaft and wandering steering and sloppy gearstick.

Thanks Nodge68. Great information on the link however I took the car for a test drive when purchasing admittedly not very fast and not very far due to lack of petrol and did the reversing on full lock VCU test and no shuddering occurred so I've dis-counted the VCU. The noise I get over 50MPH is...

Propshaft and wandering steering and sloppy gearstick.

Hi All. Took my newly acquired 2003 1.8 SE petrol Freelander down the motorway yesterday and noticed that over 50 MPH there was a high frequency growling coming from under the car so an I right in thinking that the propshaft is out of balance or the carrier bearings are shot? Additionally the...

Light blue smoke and lack of power going forward

Thanks to all of you that replied. I took it to a 4x4 specialist and they fixed the turbo boost hose that had a leak in it and cleared some faults and they said no loose connectors but they could not check the solenoid, they suggested a gearbox specialist, charged me £48 which was quite...

Light blue smoke and lack of power going forward

Thanks. Very nice MOT man who took pity on me when I drove it in and told him of the fault. He did mark it as an advisory though. :-)

Light blue smoke and lack of power going forward

Hi. I switched off my TD4 Mk1 when I came home from work and checked the water level in the expansion vessel. it was low so I topped it up. Let the engine run with the cap off for a minute then stopped the engine, replaced the top and went around squeezing hoses to make sure that no air was in...

    Freelander 2002 TD4 Radio Upgrade

Thanks. I will have another check though everything was working OK this morning with the Chinese radio. I replaced the front left speaker when I fitted that head unit because the original one was so corroded on the cone wiring that when I did a battery test it was dead. I ordered one from eBay...

    Freelander 2002 TD4 Radio Upgrade

Hi. Have upgraded my bog standard radio/cassette head unit for a cheap Chinese head unit and after replacing the front left speaker, (due to corrosion), all worked but I wasn't happy with the way the controls worked so I swapped for a new JVC KD-X352BT Bluetooth unit and left the CD changer...

    Leaking boot

HI All. I've decided that I'm going to keep my Freelander TD4 after all and spend some money on it, one thing that's bugging me though. The boot well where the jack lives has water in it. Not lots but enough to be annoying. I've seen on Youtube that it comes in from the seam where it's welded...
