Hi all.

I've passed my Freelander 1.8 2003 petrol. manual gearbox to my daughter and in the last 3 months the gear linkage has come totally adrift from the gear selector at the gearbox end.

A year ago I had a new UJ fitted for this because the selection had become floppy. I had no trouble until recently when my daughters partner has been using it for work and today for the second time it failed again.

I went out with my toolbox to rescue him and found the roll pin on the gear selector had come out, and amazingly it was still been held by the retaining spring clip.

After much pushing panting and hammering I managed to get the roll pin back in, and the clip back in place. He was able to carry on.

The first time it happened to him, we had it fixed by a local garage, and they said the UJ had not been fitted right in the first place.

Is this a common problem because I think it's bad design. I mean why did Land Rover not drill the hole sideways instead of vertically? Why did they use a roll pin anyway? I am tempted to replace the who;e pin setup with an M8 button head Allen screw and Nyloc nut.

Do you think my son-in-law is just too heavy-handed with the gear stick?

Thanks in anticipation.
