    Disco = amazing off road!

Quote Big Stu 12: Until you come to maintance, and the electronics........ Totally agree... Given ALL vehicles are compromises on comfort/economy/ability/ on or off road etc etc and we all want our compromises angled different ways I`m happy with my 300tdiand wouldn`t change it for a Td5...

    1997 model registered 1999?

You`ve had some bad luck in your search, but not as bad as actually buying a bad un! Keep your hopes up as there are good `uns out there. I don`t think your expectations are unreasonable, but do agree with you about arsehole car dealers. There are some honest ones out there.. but not too many.

    tryes

Check all wheels are exactly the same size, as well as the tyres. The style pattern doesn`t matter (except for sakes of fashion), but size does matter. Ask any lady! Prob better off with new on front and worn on rear.

Changing seals in front axle? Hope you got a BIG hammer! Check out previous threads, and expect a work out.

    Just a question

My previous answer didn`t properly address symptoms of "wanting to go in a straight line". Think this reply does tho`. If the VC is seized it could well push the car in a straight line rather than allow it to corner properly. Just like driving your 110 with dif-lock in. There should be other...

    Just a question

Same road, same speed, I`d agree with you it should go round better than a 110 with spares on the roof. If you`ve still got the original shockers on they1ll likely be past it by now. IF they need replacing up-rated shockswill stiffen the ride up, (less "wallowy"), but t will be noticably less...

    starting problems

As a suggestion try jump leads direct from battery to both relavent terminals on starter. If still sluggish gotta be starter or battery. If ok try one lead at time to see if fault on earth side or on live side??

Went to look at a Disco

The "round wheel thing" is the transmission/hand brake. Don`t want too much oil inside that! Need to find where the oil is coming from exactly, and how much, before deciding if serious or "it`s a Landy they all do that".

    10w 40 or TUO .Again !

Ta, but I ain`t an expert ! It`s all out there. Guess I got fewer mates than you, so I`m just up later at nights trawling the `net. Anyway nice to have a disagreement without all the naughty words some seem to use.

    10w 40 or TUO .Again !

Shocker I`m certainly not dis-agreeing with your basic argument, but with multi drop 7.5 tonners etc I`ll bet they only get cold overnight, even on a 45min break the engines will hold a temperature well above a cold morning start? As regards the 300TDI, I would think that the strains put on an...

    10w 40 or TUO .Again !

Mad Hat Man, as regards temperatures, surely we all want oil thats relatively "thin" at -15 in the winter, both to flow to all bearings and also allow the engine to be turned over by the cold battery. And oil does run a lot hotter than 100c in normal use, especially in the turbo diesels. In...

    10w 40 or TUO .Again !

TUO will be "thicker" at 15w than a 10w oil at low temperatures. A tractor/truck will normally only do one cold start a day, wheras a car/etc will do 2 or 3. A car will do much more cold running in it`s life than a truck, so cold start lub is relatively much more important. Also the additives...

    Castrol SP 320

Just been on the Castrol site and can`t find SP320 approved for any road/truck uses?? If it`s an sae95 gear oil I`d say it`s slightly heavier than the recommended, but.... Looked again and seems to be for industrial gearboxes. Maybe ok, but no guarantees. If you`ve got freebie then maybe use it??

    10w 40 or TUO .Again !

I stand corrected. You are precise in the detail. I am guilty of sloppy terminology, but stand by my post that a 10w/40 is normally better than a 15w/30 for most everyday uses
  18. G

    10w 40 or TUO .Again !

If so, I meant that 10w/40 starts out thinner than 15w/30 and ends up thicker than 15w/30. That`s what the numbers mean isn`t it? And I`m sure you know, but some others don`t ...NO it doesn`t mean it gets thicker as it gets hotter.

    10w 40 or TUO .Again !

Mad Hat Man, were you meaning to quote me, rather than jamesmartin, about viscosities?
  20. G

    10w 40 or TUO .Again !

Yes, I fully accept that modern tractors are high tech, powerful and expensive, and only a fool would put cheapo oil in `em, but the figures say: 10/40 starts out thinner and ends up thicker than 15/30. Surely a better deal for a coupla bob extra? And by your own argument agricultural vehicles...
