Mad Hat Man, as regards temperatures, surely we all want oil thats relatively "thin" at -15 in the winter, both to flow to all bearings and also allow the engine to be turned over by the cold battery. And oil does run a lot hotter than 100c in normal use, especially in the turbo diesels.
In the real world yes, both oils are ok, but for a few extra quid go for the wider range one (IMHO), and I totally agree frequent changes above all else.
Why no 1w/100 oils?? Who could afford it if you make it?

Shocker I`m certainly not dis-agreeing with your basic argument, but with multi drop 7.5 tonners etc I`ll bet they only get cold overnight, even on a 45min break the engines will hold a temperature well above a cold morning start?
As regards the 300TDI, I would think that the strains put on an oil running thro a hot turbo would justify a higher hot rating.
But in the real world, again, we all know a Disco well maintained will succumb to tin-worm before the engine wears out!

Ta, but I ain`t an expert ! It`s all out there. Guess I got fewer mates than you, so I`m just up later at nights trawling the `net. Anyway nice to have a disagreement without all the naughty words some seem to use.

I stand by the fact that TUO is rated and approved by the engine manufacturers. I dont claim to be an expert on oil (or anything else, much) or what the numbers mean......my evidence is purely anecdotal . I know what I and other farmers, agricultural contractors and many hauliers do. When I was in haulage we used a large national truck part factors own brand diesel engine oil.I found an old drum the other day,it didnt even have numbers on.....just the approvals by engine manufacturers.Good for VERY cold starts and all other circumstances. It was basically the same as TUO.

GT, I am sure what you say about numbers and so on is perfectly correct. I know what I and others do and what happens when we do it. I wouldnt contradict or argue with you about the numbers.

Advertiser's spend millions to put up fancy ads just to get your money. Do you think that Cummins diesel would put a 650 hp twin turbo engine costing about 40k and use **** oil? in a tractor costing 250k? If the oil is good enough for a tractor it's more than good for your land rovers, disco, freelanders, what ever you have . A proper maintained Tractor will go 6000-8000 hrs easily and big trucks300kor more miles before engine work

i would bet my bottom dollar that if you put the vast majority of 4 stroke diesel engine oil today into a 300tdi it would run and run and run without hassle.

not that arsed about cold starts, good ol' pump there chuggin oil round, turbo wont be spooling until the oil gets a good flow up anyway (within about 5-10 seconds for instance) and as for the main bearings and cylinder bores, i dont think a 4000 rpm limit is gonna make much trouble for any kind of engine providing its got some kind of engine oil in it

i think it is genuinely annoying how much oil bull**** there is these days

we have the same issues with the valeting products at work, youve got people buying meguires polishes and waxes for 40-50 quid for a 500 ml bottle, we buy auto glym trade gear and its just as good, 20 quid for 5 ltrs. its the qality of the paint that gives a great finish, not how expensive your polish is.

similar example for oils IMHO.

i use comma 20w50 mineral in the v8, she loves it. its moody as hell on the 10w40 which is recommended for it :D
